To read last week’s Weekly Recap, click here.

We figure over the Christmas holiday you’ll have a lot of free time, so we’ve given you a lot of reading. This week we spend a lot of time wondering, if Mo Farah’s double win really was “by far the greatest Olympic distance double” as Alberto Salazar claimed? We also compare Suzy Favor Hamilton to Galen Rupp, give you great coaching insight from Dan Pfaff and Alberto Salazar, wonder if this was the greatest year ever in the men’s 800,  try to figure out who had the better year in the marathon – the Kenyans or Ethiopians – and remind you to yawn before your next race. Plus Usain Bolt’s ex-girlfriend kisses and tells and why the best thing about altitude training may have nothing to do with altitude.

Stat Of The Week (Sex Sells)

We don’t have a lot to say about the Suzy Favor Hamilton story from last week other than it’s very sad and it’s clear she’s someone has struggled with mental issues for awhile.

Other than that, the people who criticized us for devoting too much space to the story last week simply don’t get it. Her story is the story of the year in terms of publicity for US track and field.

Don’t believe us? Well, here is our Stat Of The Week.

Galen Rupp’s (or Leo Manzano’s) silver certainly didn’t land them on the cover of the NY Daily News

1176 – Number of words in a New York Times story dedicated to the Suzy Favor Hamilton escort story the day after the story broke.

266 – Number of words in a New York Times story dedicated to Galen Rupp winning the silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics, when he became the first American in 48 years to medal in the event.

*NY Times Article With 10,000 Final In It
*To be fair, Mo Farah’s gold in the 5,000 did generate 789 words in the NY Times.

Letters Of The Week

Lots of Suzy Favor Hamilton jokes started popping up last week as the story even was mentioned on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

While we certainly aren’t real comfortable with making jokes about a story with such a huge impact on the mother of a seven-year-old daughter, we will say one thing we know for sure. Many have speculated the Hamilton escort escapades will result in a future book deal. If that’s true, the title has to use some version of one of the following two designs.

Video Of The Week

Given the sultry nature of our opening, we thought now was a good time for a little repentance and our video of the week.

Last week we got an email from the people behind the new film on distance running that is coming out in 2013 – Transcend - a film which features many of the best of the world’s distance runners.

They have finished their trailer for the film and we loved it. We hope you enjoy it below. If you aren’t a person of faith, you might not like the film as a large part of it is about the role faith plays in many runners’ lives:

Really? Alberto Says Mo Farah’s Distance Double Is Best In History ”By Far”

Last week, Alberto Salazar raised some eyebrows by saying that Mo Farah‘s distance double was the greatest Olympic distance double “by far.”

Upon first hearing of Salazar’s comments, many people’s instinctive reaction (including our own) was, “Are you kidding me?”

Before we analyze the validity or lack thereof of Salazar’s statement, we think it’s important to figure out exactly what did he say, as various people on the message board are reading different articles which include different quotes. Few people have bothered to listen to the great 68-minute BBC program with Alberto Salazar, Dan Pfaff and Jesssica Ennis‘ coach Tony Minichiello which is a great listen (right click on link & “save target as / link as”) and where the quote came from. But we did, and here is exactly what Alberto said about Mo’s double”:

Question (roughly 6:45 in) : As somebody who has spent a lifetime in distance running, how do you sum up the magnitude of that feat, winning 5 and 10,000 meters in a way that no body had ever come close to from Britain before.

Answer from Salazar:  I would say that he did it against better competition than has even been done before. I mean there is clearly no doubt – I know Viren did it twice and I know others did it before that – Zatopek and so forth. Distance running now is more competitive by far than it ever has been before. It’s a much harder thing to medal in distance running now than it was 20 or 30 years ago.  Why because there are so many more East Africans – so many talented runners. Now in a 25 person field, you’ve got probably 22 – 20 (who are) amongst the best in the world and a lot of them are Kenyan/Ethiopians running for different countries. It’s just so much harder now. So for Mo to beat the very best in the world, twice. He’s not just not repeating or matching what others did that double – the other two of three guys who did it – he’s surpassing them by far in doing this.

So now we know exactly what he said, let’s analyze it.

In Salazar’s defense, it needs to be pointed out that his argument is simple. Distance running is deeper than ever, it’s a global full-time professional sport, which really was never the case for most of Olympic history and thus it goes without saying, in Salazar’s mind, that a double done now is better than any ever before.

While many people who disagreed with Salazar on the message board thought this year’s competition for Farah was soft, Salazar certainly has some stats in his favor.

We did a little research and think many fans will be surprised by the following:

Mo Farah had to beat some studs to become a legend like Bolt. *More Farah Photos

2006 2
2007 1
2012 6

Five of those six guys from 2012 were in the 5,000 final at the Olympics.

Those are the facts. People can make excuses – yes, the guy who was most likely to beat him, Dejen Gebremeskel ran a stupid, stupid race and got boxed in and the second most likely to beat him, Hagos Gebrhiwet, was injured – but it was still a very high-quality field.

So Salazar has some stats and logic backing him up. Those detractors who viewed the competition that Farah faced as being soft are incorrect. The 5,000 competition wasn’t soft – the race was just run in an incredibly disappointing/stupid fashion.

So if the competition was so tough, then why did so many people view Salazar’s statement as a bit ridiculous and view Farah’s competition as soft?

We think the answer is simple. While Salazar was talking specifically about Olympic doubles and Haile Gebrselassie never did the double and Kenenisa Bekele only did it once, in 2008, Salazar’s statement seemingly meant to many that Farah is the greatest Olympic distance champion in history and many simply aren’t buying that argument for the following reasons.

1) Many people think, “How can he be the greatest distance champion in history when many think he wouldn’t have won any of previous 4 Olympic 10,000s?”

How many people really think Farah would have beaten Geb in his prime in 1996 or 2000? Or Bekele in 2004 or 2008? Not us. Mo’s closing kick is very good but we don’t think he’s as good as Geb or Bekele in their primes (on a side note, we’ll admit that even if he was as good as those two, it’s hard for people to logically fathom that a guy who couldn’t even make the Olympic final 4 years ago is now the greatest Olympic distance champion ever).

Yes, in only one of those four Olympics was the 5/10 double done, but the headline rubbed many people the wrong way as it seemingly discounts how great both Haile G and Bekele were.

2) Farah didn’t beat any “big names” in the battle for gold.

Four years ago, Kenenisa Bekele also did the 10,000/5,000 double. To us, arguing about the minutia of the relative field strengths is a bit ridiculous as both years had good fields. Nothing drastically changed in the span of 4 years as shown by the following chart.

2008 Olympic 10,000 Won By Bekele In 27:01.17
2 Sileshi Sihine 27:02.8 25 years old Already won 5 world/Olympic championship silver in in XC or track – 12:47/26:39 guy

6 Tariku Bekele 27:06.7 25 years old 12:52/27:03 guy
2012 Olympic 5,000 Won By Farah In 13:41.66
2 Dejen Gebremeskel 13:42.0 22 years old 2011 bronze medallist had run 12:46 in July
3 Thomas Longosiwa 13:42.4 30 years old Didn’t medal in 2008 but ran 12:49 in July of this year
4 Bernard Lagat 13:43.0 37 years old Had run 12:53 in 2011, but hadn’t been able to medal at age 33 in 2008
5 Isiah Koech 13:43.8 18 years old Ran 12:49 earlier this year
6 Abdelaati Iguider 13:44.2 25 years old 3:31 1,500 runner

What makes Bekele’s wins a bit more impressive in many’s eyes in terms of field strength is the fact that the runner-ups to him in both the 5,000 and 10,000 were already an established “big names” with lots of medals to their names.

Times are one thing, but much of the sporting public relates to “rings” – or, in the case of track and field, medals. When Eli Manning vanquishes a legend like Tom Brady in the Super Bowl, that generates far more respect than say when Tom Brady beats Jake Delhomme. It works the same way in track and field.

In the 10,000 in 2008, Bekele beat one of more credentialed runners of recent years in Sileshi Sihine, who had already won 5 Olympics/World Championships silvers before the 2008 Games, and in the 5,000 he beat a former world champion in Eliud Kipchoge. As for Farah, he beat a previous non-medallist in Galen Rupp and a previous bronze medallist in terms of Dejen Gebremeskel (we think in future years when it’s likely that Gebremeskel has a ton of golds to his name, people may give Mo a bit more credit). Additionally, Bekele beat a 4-years-younger version of Tadese and Lagat as well.

But just because the general public hasn’t heard of a particular runner doesn’t mean they aren’t a total stud. Farah beat some very, very good people.

3) The more we analyze this the more we wonder, “Did Alberto Salazar simply just forget about the 2008 double of Kenenisa Bekele when he set Olympic records in both the 5000 and 10000, set the Olympic records in both races and totally destroyed the fields?”

Seemingly so. We don’t think how anyone could think what Mo did this year surpassed “by far” what Bekele did in 2008. No, what Bekele did in 2008 was clearly more impressive than what Farah accomplished in 2012. There is no doubt about it.

In 2008, Bekele beat a guy who was already at the time a 5-time Olympic/Worlds silver medallist by 1.6 seconds in the 10k and then came back and ran what we said at the time was the greatest 5k ever run. Largely from the front, Bekele a 12:57.52 5,000 which gave him an unreal 4.98-second margin of victory thanks to a sub-4 last mile (3:57.01 last 1,600) and 2:25.30 last 1k and 53.87 last lap. He beat the best runners in the world in a 5k by nearly 5 seconds with no rabbits. That’s ridiculous and clearly the end of the greatest Olympic double in history. End of story, game over. It’s not like the level of competition was much different in the span of 4 years, but both the margin of victory in both races was much larger and the way the victories were achieved was more impressive as well.

And you know who even agrees with us?

Alberto Salazar.

Yes, that’s right.

Salazar either realized the error of his initial statement or maybe he simply forgot to mention Bekele’s 2008 double on the BBC show (or maybe the BBC edited out any mention of Bekele), as as a few days after the BBC show aired, another quote appeared from Salazar in The Telegraph:

“Other than Bekele [who won double gold in Beijing in 2008], I think Mo’s achievement was greater than any other distance runner at an Olympics.”

So there you have it. The big controversy of the last week has been solved.

Quotes Of The Week That Weren’t Quote Of The Day

The BBC show with Salazar, Pfaff and Minichiello was fantastic. We listened to all 68 minutes of it. We know most of you don’t have time to do it but if you are a college or pro coach, you definitely should (right click on link & “save target as / link as”). For the rest, we’ll save you a ton of time and share with you four of our favorite quotes from the show. The First 4 of our 8 Quotes of the Week That Weren’t Quote of The Day all come from the show:

#1 – Alberto Salazar And Dan Pfaff On The Importance of Biomechanics In Track And Field

Alberto (Roughly 36:00 into interview): “I would say the number one thing that we look at is proper bio mechanics. It’s amazing to me that any coaches of athletes up to the 800 meters will swear to you about the importance of biomechanics – that you have to run bio-mechanically correct. But yet, most distance coaches it will tell you it’s not at all important once you get over 800 meters – that it’s doesn’t matter at all – you just have to log the miles. To me, that’s just not rational. It makes no sense whatsoever. In every sport, we talk and know there is a certain way to kick the ball, to hit a baseball. If you don’t have good biomechanics, ultimately it will lead to injuries …

If you look at the London 10k final, the four guys that finished 1-2-3-4, I would argue those guys had the best biomechanics of the race. Mo, Galen, the older Bekele brother and the younger Bekele brother – they all have great biomechanics and they beat all of the Kenyans who don’t have great biomechanics.”

Pfaff: For me the foundation of all coaching in any sport is – Is it economical, is it efficient, is it preventing injuries? If you have a footballer that is out 8 weeks with a grade two hamstring tear, I’m like that doesn’t have to be – why did it tear? In Formula One, every time the car goes around the track, they bring it in for a pit stop to check things – I just think these guys are Formula One cars.

#2 -
Dan Pfaff On How Athletes Are Narcissistic And Want To Feel Special

Pfaff (we forgot to write down where this appears in podcast): I think I’ve been blessed to coach 40 years and coach a lot of really good people in a wide arrange of events. I think I’ve built a CV that says, “This guy can’t be too stupid.” That being said, I think no matter what level I get to or whom I’m coaching, I think I’ve got to prove I’m doing things right for them, because athletes are very narcissistic and they want to feel they are special and, “I’m unique and you don’t understand my issues or my problems,” so every day I have to do the empathy compassion thing – climb inside their body and mind and say “Why are they acting this way or behaving this way?”

****
#3 –
Dan Pfaff On How He’s Never Satisfied As A Coach – Even When They Set A World Record And Win An Olympic Gold Medal

Pfaff (roughly 49:00 into the podcast): Donovan had to be very safe driving from the blocks in Atlanta so his first six steps were terrible and his next six steps he was just trying to feel things out to make sure his leg wasn’t going to explode and then from 50 to 70 he did some really good things but then after 70, he did some really stupid things. So when we sat down and did the de-brief, he had to remind me, “You know I broke the world record and I won the gold,” but I was like, “Yeah but here were about 12 things you could have done a lot better.”

****
#4 –
Alberto Salazar, Who Personally Thinks He Trained Harder Than Anyone Else In The World, On Why He Doesn’t Try To Have His Own Athletes Do That

Salazar (approximately 55-56 minutes into podcast): What my athletes and I believe is we train smarter than anyone else …

I realize now when we are going against so many talented athletes that the chances that you have out-trained everybody else in terms of volume and how hard you have pushed yourself are very slight, because when you are going against so many athletes, a lot of them out of just desperation will try to do incredible things – run 200 or 250 miles week. If we try to do that, statistically the chance that ay one person is going to survive that training regime and not get injured is very small. But when you have hundreds and thousands of them trying that, the few that survive are going to beat us. If they are doing 200 or 250 miles per week, and Mo Farah can only run 125 per week (which is all Alberto thinks he can handle), how is Mo going to match that one guy that does 200 per week and survives? We can’t unless everything we do is done so much better.

Now we can realistically have a good chance of beating that guy. He may do more than us, but he doesn’t do it as smart as us. He doesn’t have as good bio-mechanics or overall muscular strength – that’s how we bridge that gap.

#5 – 2004 World Cross-Country Champion Benita Willis On How The Greatest Benefit From Altitude Training Has Nothing To Do With Altitude

“The benefits physiologically of training at altitude are a bonus on top of everything else I believe. The main benefit in my opinion is that it enables you to do your training properly and include all the 1%ers every day. Not missing your core because you had to go out, or this afternoon run because your friends came over and you decided to drink and watch the cricket on TV instead.”

- The quote comes from Willis’ journal on Runner’s Tribe.

#6 – British Office Worker (And Part-Time Model Of Some Sort To Be Fair), Who Dated Usain Bolt For A Few Months, Reveals The True Usain Bolt

“I thought he was quiet, very handsome and unassuming. I wasn’t star-struck and maybe he liked that. …
He was really sweet to talk to, nothing like the shouty show-off you see when he wins a race …
He is a very funny character and made me laugh a lot.”

- 22-year-old Megan Edwards (pictured with Usain), who met Bolt when she was modeling the Jamaica team kit at a press conference, and then dated him for a few months but broke it off as she’s just a normal worker who doesn’t have time to date a global superstar long-distance.

#7 – The NY Times On Why A Study Saying Too Much Running Will Kill You Led To So Much Glee In Non-Running World

“A lot of people use their athleticism in an attempt to show they are a superior human being” and so when “runners use their prowess, real or exaggerated, to suggest superiority, they generate resentment” and so “people love to find studies that support the bias that too much exercise is bad.”

#8 Seb Coe Has Some High Hopes For Brit Andrew Osagie

“I think his progress has been fantastic. If you said to Andrew Osagie at the beginning of the season you are going to run 1:43.8 in the final of the Olympic Games I think he would have taken that … I really hope that Andrew Osagie believes he can beat David Rudisha.”

- Coe from a Sky Sports article. All we can say is 1:43.8 is 2.9 seconds away from 1:40.9 and that’s a lot.

2012 – The Greatest Year Ever In The Men’s 800???

Our research into comparing the 2008 versus 2012 5ks and 10ks got us to thinking about other Olympic events this year. Given Coe’s quote, it was hard not to think about the men’s 800 as after all it was an incredible year in the event, as last place in the Olympic final was 1:43.8.

But was it the greatest year ever in terms of depth of the men’s 800?

Here’s what our research reveals:

Nijel Amos (left – 1:41.73) and Timothy Kitum (right – 1:42.53) were pretty special in London as well but the night belonged to David Rudisha’s and his 1:40.91.

2012 Marathoning Examined – Who Dominated – Ethiopia Or Kenya?

Toni Reavis had a nice tongue in cheek piece this week where he said maybe the marathon should be moved to ‘Demonstration Sport” status at the Olympics as it’s dominated by runners from just two countries – Kenya and Ethiopia – and the medals are supposed to go to truly global sports.

While reading that piece, we starting thinking about the marathon a bit. 2011 was the year of the Kenyan marathoners on the men’s side as Kenyans set CRs at all of the majors and won the world championship as well.

As for the theme for 2012, well that’s what we found to be interesting. Remember, at the Olympics, lots of talk was devoted to the fact that all three Ethiopian men were DNFs at the Games.

Because of that, many may have forgotten or never realized that the first part of the year belonged to the Ethiopian men – at least in terms of time. And the year-end results show that still to be the case. Despite going 0 for 3 at the Olympics in terms of even finishing, Ethiopia produced 7 of the 10 fastest men’s times in 2012:

2012 Top Ten Marathon Times – Men

Going farther down, there was actually an 11th guy who broke 2:05 this year – Kenya’s Jonathan Maiyo at 2:04:56. We just felt bad leaving a 2:04 guy out of our list.

Where did America’s fastest marathoner for 2012, Dathan Ritzenhein, rank at 2:07:47?

#69.

As for the women … well, the top 10 were split evenly between Kenya and Ethiopia – five to five.

American Shalane Flanagan‘s 2:25:38 puts her at #53 on the 2012 list.

Of course, given the global depth of distance running, there is no shame in not making the top 20 in your particular event.

Guess where 2012 Olympic 1,500 silver medallist Leo Manzano ranked in the 1,500 in terms of time in 2012 at 3:34.08?

Weekly Free Coaching Advice – Try Yawning Before Your Next Big Race

While coaching at Cornell University, LetsRun.com co-founder Robert Johnson used to always think it was a good sign if he saw one of his athletes yawn before a race.

Occasionally, he’d see other coaches berating their athletes who were yawning for not being ready or being focused, and he’d just chuckle.

From his own experience, he knew the yawn was a good sign. He didn’t know why, but he just knew he used to often yawn before big races and saw many truly elite runners do so as well. Well researchers now understand why many yawn before a big performance and they think they know why it helps one’s performance.. Here is why as explained in an article on competitor.com:

Experts suggest that yawning may actually provide a competitive advantage, as it stimulates the precuneus, a structure in the brain that affects consciousness and attentional focus.

Yawning also regulates the temperature and metabolism of the brain. By cooling down the frontal lobes, they are thought to work more effectively and, in turn, allow for greater concentration.

“It takes a lot of neural energy to stay consciously alert,” explained Andrew Newberg, M.D., director of research at the Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

“Yawning probably evolved as a way to cool down the overly active mammalian brain.”

That’s a pretty scientific answer for you. If that’s too complex, thankfully some of the scientists who know why yawning works simplified things later in the article.

“Through the benefits of cerebral cooling, yawning may provide an increase in attention and focus immediately prior to races,” said Andrew Gallup, Ph.D., a researcher in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University.

Newberg agrees. “Yawning at the beginning of a race can get you in a quick state of relaxed alertness, ready to perform.”

Govt. Increase Athletics’ Funding In Uk From £25.15m To £26.8m Swimming was the big loser as they lost £4.0m down to £21.4m over 4 years. Equestrian was the big winner with a huge increase of more than £4.5m. All we can say is imagine the outrage in America if the US govt. spent $29.9 million on equestrian.

Monday 12/24: Kim Conley: “Why would you want my autograph?”

Response: “Just wait … one day … you’ll see.”

- Exchange between US 5,000m Olympian Kim Conley and the UC Davis sports psychologist Paul Salitsk when he asked her to sign a poster after she graduated in 2009. This was her first-ever autograph, back when her PR (16:17) was almost a minute slower than the 15:20 Olympic “A” standard.

Sunday 12/23: “I would turn up, buzz the door and one of his assistants would come and let me in. We’d chill out and watch television or I’d watch him play computer games. He really liked Call of Duty, which is not really my scene but I have younger brothers who play it. The first time I went around there I was pretty nervous. I thought ‘This is Usain Bolt, for God’s sake, the guy probably has girls throwing themselves at him left, right and centre, and he’s with me.’”

“I wanted to go on a proper date but he was worried he’d get swamped by fans. He can’t even sit in a restaurant without being asked for his autograph. … I did occasionally think about being Mrs. Bolt and living in Jamaica with lots of little Bolts. My feelings were pretty strong for him, strong enough that I wanted to go to Jamaica … I really liked him, but I only have a set amount of holiday that I can use each year and I’m not going to use it all up going to see Usain Bolt in Jamaica.”

- British office worker and sprinter Megan Edwards, talking about what it was like to date Usain Bolt. She has broken the relationship off now, though, citing the difficulties of long distance.

Saturday 12/22: “I have tried to make the case numerous time, here and elsewhere, that people who perform at the extremes in any area of endeavor have commensurate extreme needs. No one makes the Olympic finals, the Super Bowl, World Series, Carnegie Hall, the U.S. Congress, or the Louvre that does not suffer from some form of clinical neurosis and/or psychosis. The only difference is the form taken, and how it is manifested. There are no boy scouts or girl scouts on the podium and pedestal of extreme excellence.

- Brooks Johnson, former USATF coach of the year, in an excellent piece on Suzy Favor Hamilton that gives some insight into her tremendous need for validation from others. And for the record LRC doesn’t agree that every highly successful person has a clinical psychosis.

Friday 12/21: “I take full responsibility for my mistakes. I’m not the victim and I’m not going that route. I’m owning up to what I did. I would not blame anybody except myself. Everybody in this world makes mistakes. I made a huge mistake. Huge.”

- 3-time Olympian and 9-time NCAA champion (the most ever), Suzy Favor Hamilton, talking to The Smoking Gun about how she has been working as a $600 an hour ($6,000 per day) call girl since last December.

Thursday 12/20: “If you have a doping offense or you test positive, it goes without saying you are fired from all of your contracts … It would all would go away. And the faith of all the cancer survivors – everything I do off of the bike would go away too. And don’t think for a second, I don’t understand that. It’s not about money for me. It’s about also about the faith people have put in me over the years. All of that would be erased so I don’t need it to say in a contract that you’re fired if you test positive. That’s not as important as losing the support of hundreds of millions of people.”

- Lance Armstrong, lying under oath back in 2006, when he shamelessly used his cancer fight to make it seem like he had to be clean.

Wednesday 12/19: “For Mo to beat the best in the world twice at the Olympics, he’s not matching those guys who have done the double before.”

“He’s surpassed them by far.”

- Alberto Salazar, not holding back with the BBC as to how he views what his athlete, Mo Farah, accomplished at the Olympics. Was Farah’s double “the greatest accomplishment in history” as one paper says Salazar claimed? Discuss in our forum.

Tuesday 12/18: “Move over pippa @J_Ennis is now Queen of the bottom!”

- Tweet about Jessica Ennis butt as to how it compares to Kate Middleton‘s at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year gala. The press wasn’t all positive for Ennis, however, as some have accused her of snubbing the Duchess.

2013 IAAF Shanghai Diamond League Recap: Asbel Kiprop Pulls Off A Houdini Act, New Stars in the Men’s Steeple and Women’s 5,000?

by LetsRun.com
May 18, 2013

The second stop of the 2013 IAAF Diamond League track and field circuit took place Saturday night in Shanghai (Saturday morning in the US) under wet conditions.

Mid-d and distance wise there was some great action as Asbel Kiprop pulled off an mind-boggling/thrilling victory in the men’s 1,500, a new phenom emerged in the men’s steeple, and perhaps as well in the women’s 5000. Plus Francine Niyonsaba dominated the women’s 800.

The biggest news from the meet was Kirani James opening with a 44.02 win.

We recap the mid-d and distance action for you below in great detail before quickly taking a look at the other events. We’ve embedded in all Universal Sports race videos if they exist.

Men’s 1,500: Asbel Kiprop Pulls A Houdini Act and Esacapes With An Absolutely Thrilling Victory

“Are you kidding us?”

That’s what we thought to ourrselves after the finish of this thriller.

In the end, the Asbel Kiprop show continued as he picked up his second 1,500 victory over the world’s best in the span of eight days but boy did he make it interesting. On a wet evening in Shanghai, Kiprop took his customary spot up front near the two rabbits at the start, but 500 meters in, he let the rabbits go and allowed himself to be swallowed up by the pack.

Kiprop almost appeared to be bagging it as at the bell he was way back in 9th place. Even with 300m to go, he was still in 9th. And then wait, coming off the final turn, Kiprop reappears in the picture in sixth to contend.

What’s this?

Yes, you got it, he spotted the field 1.5+ seconds seconds at bell – hell 1.5 seconds at 300 – and still got the job done as he just barely had enough time to catch Ethiopia’s Mekonnen Gebremedhin at the line as Kiprop won in 3:32.39 to Gebremedhin’s 3:32.43.

Truly ridiculous. Look how far back Kiprop was at 300m:

2013 Shanghai 1500

Leader to leader, the last lap was run in 55.41 but Kiprop was in about 53.3.

2008 Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis was right behind Kiprop with 100 meters remaining in seventh and poised for a good finish as he’s known for having a good close and he seemed to be moving up. But when Willis moved outside to try to bring it home, he went down in a fall. Perhaps he clipped the runner in front of him? It’s hard to say for sure but Willis ended up 10th in 3:40.72. However, considering sixth place ended up running 3:33.85, it’s safe to say Willis was on his way to a 3:33 finish.

The sixth place finisher was non other than 2011 world championship silver medalist Silas Kiplagat. Kiplagat, who was only 10th in Doha last week,  had talked a lot of trash coming into Shanghai about the great shape he was in, but he certainly didn’t show it in Shanghai and he had no excuses like last week when he nearly fell at the bell.

Asbel Kiprop finds enough to win in Shanghai

Asbel Kiprop finds enough to win in Shanghai

Quick Take (QT) #1: When he’s on,there is no one on the planet who can beat Asbel Kiprop except maybe for Algeria’s Olympic champion Taoufik Makhloufi (and we’ve never really seen the two of them battle each other when they both were on) or perhaps a totally in-form Silas Kiplagat (not the case right now). That being said, Kiprop certainly can beat himself and thus the 1,500 is going to be a must-watch race all year long.

QT #2: Watching the race replay, we had Kiprop  in the following places with the following splits at various places in the race (for places, we took out the rabbit).

300: 41.7 (1st)
400: 56.5 (1st)
700: 1:40.5 (4th)
800: 1:55.0 (4th)
1100 : 2:39.0 (9th)
1200 2:53.0 (9th)
1500: 3:32.39 (1st)

QT #3: After the race, Nick Willis emailed his post-race reaction to Athletics New Zealand. On the positive side, stuff.co.nz says he wrote,”Ran the best first 1000m of my Diamond League career.”

But he was clearly upset with finish: “Very disappointing to come all the way to China and not have my performance reflect my fitness.  Regardless, I ran a poor tactical race from 1000-1200m, and that cost me a chance at the win. Even if I hadn’t tripped, third was the best I could have finished. Good prep for my upcoming races in the US.”

QT# 4: If you didn’t watch this race, the results don’t show it justice – so please do yourself a favor and after looking at the results below, watch the full race replay which is embedded below the results.

Men’s Steeple: 18-Year old Phenom Conseslus Kipruto Impresses

The future in the men’s steeplechase has arrived and it has a name – Conseslus Kipruto.

Heading into the men’s steeplechase which featured the fastest man in the world from 2012 in Paul Kipsiele Koech (who just missed the World Record last year), as well as the 2008 Olympic champ Brimin Kipruto (who almost certainly would have medalled in London had he not fallen in last year’s Olympic final), as well 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Abel Mutai, we urged you not to over look 18-year old Conseslus Kipruto.

We wrote the following of Kipruto (the 2011 World Youth and 2012 World Junior steeple champ who ran 8:03.49 last year at age 17 and was 5th at world juniors this year in XC):

He might represent the future of the event.

As said above, it looks like the future is now here.

Kipruto ripped a 59 last lap (leader to leader it was 59.83 but Kipruto wasn’t in the lead at the bell) to get the win in a new personal best and new world leading time of 8:01.16, which also was a new Shanghai meet record. Kipsiele Koech, who is known for producing fast early season times in May, ended up second in 8:02.63 as 21-year old Hilary Yego, the 2009 World Youth champ, ended up third in a new pb of 8:03.57 (previous pr of 8:07.71).

The top three were right together at the bell. Heading into the last water jump, Kipruto and Koech were next to each other but coming off the water jump Kipruto pulled away convincingly. Kipruto stuttered coming into the final barrier on the homestretch but it didn’t matter as he was flying on the last lap. The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Abel Mutai was the best of the rest at 8:08.83.

Quick Take #1: Kipruto appears to be something special. The world junior record of 7:58.66 from 2001 by Stephen Cherono appears to be within reach. Cherono is of course the world record holder at 7:53.63.

QT #2: Don’t let the 8:14 time by 2008 Olympic champ Brimin Kipruto make you write him off. He’s very good at getting his peak right. Last year in May on the DL circuit, he only ran 8:26 in Doha.

QT #3: This was a high quality affair. Prior to tonight, Kenya’s Jairus Birech was the world leader at 8:15.26. Tonight he ran a new seasonal best of nearly 5-seconds (8:10.27) and was only sixth.

Women’s 800: Francine Niysonaba Dominates Final 200 of Uneven Race

With 2008 Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo a no-show, the women’s 800 was won as expected by the woman who was the revelation of the 2012 season, Burundi’s Francine Niysonaba. Niyonsaba burst onto the scene out of nowhere least year as a 19-year old novice who had no idea of the proper way to run an 800, often making multiple moves, and before the year was over she was an Olympic 800 finalist with a 1:56.59 pb.

Francine Niyonsaba priot to 2013 Shanghai

Francine Niyonsaba priot to 2013 Shanghai

Tonight, on the first lap, Niyonsaba showed she’s still not a veteran as she ran a crazy second turn. Heading into the second turn, it looked as if Niyonsaba was going to settle into last place, then she changed her mind and quickly accelerated and blew by everyone in the field except for the race leader and the rabbit (whom no one followed). Niyonsaba then stayed up front and controlled the race nicely in the unevenly paced raced before destroying everyone in the final 100.

Niyonsaba’s split at 400 was right near 60 (probably just under) and her 600 split was 1:31.21, but she was able to pick it up over the last 200 and finished in 2:00.33 – a new world leader (Brenda Martinez‘s 1:59 from the Re:Run meet has not been accepted as the track didn’t have a curb on it). Very few people are able to accelerate over the final 200 in a 2:00 race and that was confirmed by the fact that second was nearly a full second back. 2007 world champ Janeth Jepkosgei won a three way battle for runner-up honors in 2:01.28.

QT #1: Niyonsaba is a talent and will be hard to beat this year. That being said, she needs to learn how to race.

QT #2: The announcers of the IAAF international feed (not sure who they were, if you know, please email us) said 2008 Olympic champ Pamela Jelimo, who finally had a good year last year after two horrible years, was unable to get a visa to China. However, that may just been an excuse for not showing up as they’ve heard she’s not in good shape once again.

Women’s 5000: Dibaba Over Defar But In A New Way

Last year at the Olympics, Ethiopia’s Meseret Defar stunned seven time Olympic/World track champion Tirunesh Dibaba in the women’s 5000 to become a two-time Olympic 5000 champ (she also won the 5000 in 2004). Well tonight in Shanghai, Dibaba’s little sister, Genzebe Dibaba, got revenge for her big sis as Genzebe used her 3:57.54 1500 speed to crush Defar and everyone else in the field over the final 400 thanks to a sub-59 second last lap (leader to leader it was 59.00).

Genzebe Dibaba won in a new world leading time of 14:45.92 to Defar’s 14:47.76. Kenya’s Viola Kibiwot, herself a 3:59 1,500 runner who was 6th in the 5000 at the 2012 Olympics, was third in 14:48.29 after doing most of leading after the second rabbit departed at 2k.

QT #1: We don’t understand why races need rabbits at all if they are going to last only 2k – which isn’t really a big help. Once they dropped, the pace slowed dramatically which played into the 1,500 runner Dibaba’s hands.

QT #2: We described Dibaba as a “1,500 runner” above but it will be interesting to see where she ends up. When the 22-year old Dibaba first came onto the circuit, she tried to make it as a 5000 runner but had much less success than she had last year in the 1,500. She was just 8th in the 2009 and 2011 world champs at 5000. Of course, she was very young then. Now that she’s a bit older, the 5000 might be perfect for her. Particularly championship 5000 races which often are tactical as she’s got great wheels.

The 5000 might also be more appealing as somehow her 3:57.54 last week only got her third in Doha.

QT #3: A disappointing night for 2009 and 2011 world championshp silver medalist 2011 Sylvia Kibet who was just 9th.

QT #4: Below the results, we’ve embedded 3:49 of race highlihts.

Men’s 400: King James Reigns Supreme

In the battle between the 2008 and 2012 Olympic champs as well as the 2012 Olympic silver medalist, this one firmly belonged to the 2012 Olympic champ Kirani James who really pulled away from LaShawn Merritt over the final 100 to win in a really quick 44.02 to Merritt’s 44.60. London silver medalist Luguelin Santos as third in 45.11.

QT #1: 44.02 is very good. James has only run faster once in his life – the 43.94 he ran to win Olmpic gold.

QT #2: 44.60 – the time Merritt ran today for 2nd – won James gold at the 2011 world champs.

Men’s 110 Hurdles

World record holder and Olympic champ Aries Merritt didn’t even make it over the first hurdle and he didn’t even try to jump it. Television commentator Tim Hutchings was stunned by Merritt’s lack of effort. Perhaps he felt something in his hammy – no need to risk it – this early. In his absence, the win went to the London silver medallist Jason Richardson in a modest 13.23. Race replay below results.

Men’s 200

A tight 3-way finish

A tight 3-way finish

2012 Olympic bronze medallist Warren Weir started to lose it completely at the end of his 200 as American Justin Gatlin moved up late but Weird hung on for a narrow victory.

Let’s hope Wallace Spearmon, who had run a 9.92 windy 100 at the Texas Relays, isn’t injured.

Olympians Langat, Aregawi, Gebrhiwet Added To adidas Grand Prix

By Chris Lotsbom

May 16, 2013

A trio of top distance stars have been added to the adidas Grand Prix meeting on Saturday, May 25, in New York City, the first of two USA stops for the IAAF Diamond League. Olympic champion Nancy Langat, European Indoor Championships winner Abeba Aregawi, and World Junior Record holder Hagos Gebrhiwet will all toe the line at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island.

Kenya’s Langat, 31, won her only competition thus far in 2013 at the Penn Relays, timing 4:28.50 in the mile. At historic Franklin Field, the 2008 Olympic champion at 1500m bested the field by nearly ten seconds.  In New York City, though, Langat will face tougher competition as she runs the 1500m against Sweden’s Aregawi. Last week Aregawi set the world lead over 1500m at the opening Diamond League meeting in Doha. Moving away from the field in the final lap, the Ethiopian born Aregawi –who transferred allegiance from Ethiopia to Sweden in December, 2012– finished all alone in 3:56.60. Her time was a national record.

Returning to the United States is Gebrhiwet, who raced in America during the indoor season.  While States-side, the 2012 Olympian set a world junior record over 3000m in Boston, timing 7:32.87. Only one week ago, the 19-year-old Ethiopian ran a world lead at 3000m, beating a stellar field at the Doha Diamond League meeting. In New York City he will run the 5000m.

Previously announced for the adidas Grand Prix was 800m Olympic champion and world record holder David Rudisha. The Kenyan also ran in Doha on May 10, where he timed 1:43.87.

“It’s a world lead but I can do better for sure,” Rudisha told Race Results Weekly last week.

Last year in New York City, Rudisha won the 800m in 1:41.74.

The 800m may be the most intriguing field of the meeting, as 2008 Olympic 1500m medalist Nick Willis, former 800m World Champion and Olympic silver medalist Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, USA indoor champion Erik Sowinski, Briton Andrew Osagie, and local favorite Robby Andrews will all be competing.

9 more Olympic, World Champs join adidas Grand Prix

Richards-Ross headlines sensational W400m; Gebrhiwet to run M5000

Press Release
May 16, 2013

NEW YORK CITY—With nine days until the adidas Grand Prix takes over Icahn Stadium for a day already brimming with some of the top track-and-field talent in the world, nine Olympic gold medalists or World Champions have been added to the lineup.

Making her season debut will be Sanya Richards-Ross, who in 2012 capped the best season of her career with an Olympic gold medal at 400 meters, and then followed it up with her third Olympic gold in the 4×400-meter relay.

The American Record-holder at 400 meters, who in 2012 was ranked #1 in the world for the sixth time in her career, will face Amantle Montsho of Botswana and Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain, giving the women’s 400-meter field not only the last two Olympic gold medalists—Ohuruogu won in 2008—but also the last three IAAF World Champions. Ohuruogu won the world title in 2007, Richards-Ross in 2009, and Montsho in 2011.

Ohuruogu also won the silver medal in London, where Montsho finished fourth.

The adidas Grand Prix will kick off the summer on May 25 at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. Tickets for the event are on sale at www.adidasgrandprix.com or 1-877-849-8722.

But the 400-meter women aren’t the only champions joining the roster. Also offering fans some of the best track-and-field action in the world will be:

Christian Taylor, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist and 2011 World Champion, and Phillips Idowu of Great Britain, the 2009 World Champion, in the triple jump;

Reese Hoffa, the 2007 World Champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in the shot put, who will meet up with previously announced Ryan Whiting, who has the longest throw in the world this year;

Nancy Langat of Kenya, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, who will face 2013 world-leading Abeba Aregawi of Sweden at 1500 meters;

Tianna Madison Bartoletta, the 2005 World Champion in the long jump and 2012 Olympic gold medalist and World Record-holder in the 4×100-meter relay, who will compete here at 100 meters; and face, among others, 2011 World Championships bronze medalist Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad & Tobago.

Hagos Gebrhiwet, the 2013 World Junior Cross Country Champion and 5000-meter World Junior Record-holder who dominated a top field in winning at 3000 meters at the Diamond League season opener in Doha. The young Ethiopian sensation turned 19 on May 11.

Occidental High Performance Recap: Mary Cain Steals the Show, Mo Farah Debuts, and Will Leer Keeps Winning

Salazar: “I didn’t make Mary Cain; she was already made.”

by: LetsRun.com
May 18, 2013

Many of the pros at the 2013 USATF Occidental High Performance meet disappointed as at a meet where the whole point is to chase times, there were no World Championship qualifying ‘A’ standard performances achieved in the men’s 1,500, men’s 5000 or both of the steeplechases, but high schooler Mary Cain saved the day by excelling in the women’s 1,500.

A quick recap and results below.

Women’s 1500: Mary Cain 4:04.62!!!! Mary Cain is Now Nearly 10 Seconds Faster than the 2nd Fastest US High School Runner Ever

Forget about the pros.

The Mary Cain show keeps on rolling. The performance of the night came from Cain, the high school junior, running 4:04.62 for 2nd in the 1500m behind Katie Mackey.

Yes, Cain got under the World Championship “A” standard of 4:05.50 for the first time as did Mackey, but that was almost inconsequential.

This one wasn’t about obscure qualifying standards but records. Cain smashed her previous US high school record of 4:10.77 by over 6 seconds. Until last year no American high schooler had run faster than 4:14.50 (Jordan Hasay) at 1500m. Now Mary Cain has run nearly ten seconds faster. USTFCCA says her time would be the second fastest ever by a collegian which means Jenny Simpson has only run faster. Stat man Mirko Jalava says Cain’s run made her the 4th fastest youth runner (16 and under) ever.

A great run by Cain and she is getting better as the season goes on (she was 6th at Drake Relays).

If there was one person who wasn’t surprised by Cain’s performance, it was her coach, Alberto Salazar. After the race in an interview with FloTrack (full interview embedded below), Salazar said he wasn’t surprised she ran that fast as he knew she could get under 4:05 and even down to 4:02 eventually this season (although he said she’s “ahead of schedule” as he thought Oxy would only be won in around 4:07).

You might think this is because he sees her crushing it in workouts, but you’d be wrong. “Her races are way beyond her workouts” says Salazar. “But still, her workouts have improved from where they were in the winter. … So, just using that sort of extrapolation,  I thought she could run 4:05. Still, she does workouts you wouldn’t think would produce a 4:05. They’re not quite that good yet. But for her, I know that they are.”

After Cain’s fine run, Salazar showed great class in not taking much of the credit for getting Cain to achieve it as he said, “She’s a very natural athlete. She ran 4:11 last year (under HS coach Ed Stickles) so she’s ran 6 seconds faster with me this year. That’s not a heck of a lot from a sophomore to a junior in high school; you should probably expect that much. She’s got a lot of talent, my job is to make sure that talent is fulfilled, that she doesn’t get injured, a lot of people have talent, but [inaudible]. I didn’t make Mary Cain; she was already made.”

The women one spot behind Cain at Drake was Sarah Brown. Brown, the former Sarah Bowman, who was a star at Tennessee ran 4:05.67 in 2009, but hadn’t run under 4:08 since. She popped a 4:05.27 here sneaking under the “A” standard of 4:05.30. Well done for her and Mackey but this was Mary Cain’s day. Salazar says “she’s got a shot at making the [US World] team” and with the “A” standard, 3rd in the country ranking, and 2:01 800 speed, you’d be crazy to argue with him.

Quick Take #1 (QT #1): Cain’s run stole the show for the entire night. We said above she’d be the second fastest collegian in history and that is supported by the fact that tonight she beat 2013 NCAA indoor mile champ Emma Coburn of Colorado who PRd herself at 4:06.87 (previous pb of 4:09.42)

QT #2: Let’s don’t forget that the 25-year old former Washington runner Mackey was the race winner in a new pb. Mackey’s previous pb was 4:06.67.

Men’s 1500m: Will Leer Wins the Big Race of the Day, Nick Symmonds Win the $2500 and No one Hits the “A” Standard

Will Leer Beat the Big Boys (More photos here)

Will Leer won heat #1 that featured Olympic silver medalists Leo Manzano and Galen Rupp, but the race disappointed as no-one ran quick and got a qualifying time. A bit of justice was served as 800 man Nick Symmonds won heat #2 with the fastest time of the day and as a result took home the $2500 first place prize.

That’s only possible in the non fan friendly world of time trial track and field.

In heat 1, Will Leer’s fine 2013 continued. The indoor USATF 1500 and 3000m champion and Mt Sac 5000m champion, who moved back home with his parents this year, kept on winning. Here he got a ton of scalps including Galen Rupp who was second here for the second straight year. Shockingly, Leer was denied the ‘A’ standard he has so long coveted of 3:35.50 as he won in 3:36.67.

The more credentialed milers Wheating, Manzano and Lomong were close behind Rupp, but no one ran real quick.

In heat 2, Nick Symmonds showed the Bachelor talk isn’t keeping him from training as he got the win over American record holder in the steeple Evan Jager. Symmonds also had the fastest time of the day so he “won” this event.

Interestingly, Symmonds ran .03 faster here last year, (Last year’s results here) but it was a nice start to the more competitive part of his season.

Mo Farh Won the 5k on the Last Lap

Men’s 5000m: Mo Farah Wins His 2013 5k Debut

Mo Farah was content to just win this one in his outdoor track debut of 2013 as the World and Olympic champion got the win easily on the final lap with training partner Dathan Ritzenhein 2nd as no one got the “A” standard of 13:15.00.

Galen Rupp ran in this race as a workout until the final mile after he raced the 1500m.

QT #1: Training parnters Chris Solinsky and Alan Webb both ran slower than they did at Stanford.

QT #2: Nice run by Ritz, but did you you realize he ran 13:14 here last year? And Farah seems to be behind where he was last year as he had 3:34 and 13:12 double wins last year.

Women’s 5000m: Molly Huddle Impresses, So Does Treniere Moser

The American record holder Molly Huddle dominated. The surprise was Treniere Moser ran 15:11 for second as her rejuvenation under new coach Alberto Salazar continues. Until this run most people assumed Moser would be a factor this year at 1500, not 5000m. We believe this was Moser’s first “A” standard in any event since 2007.

Jenny Simpson Wins the 800m

Women’s 800m: Jenny Simpson is Back

2011 World 1500m Champion Jenny Simpson’s successful return to college coach Mark Wetmore has started out incredibly well. First was a 4:03 win at 1500m at the Drake Relays. Now a lifetme PR at 800.

Simpson’s got the win over 800m runners Phoebe Wright and Latavia Thomas in a personal best of 2:00.45. Simpson’s previous best was 2:01:20 from 2011.

QT #1: Last year when Simpson dropped down to 800, the results were disastrous as she ran 2:03.49 here and 2:05.79 in New York. She’s officially back!!

Men’s 800m: Who?! Brandon Johnson Wins (Or Does He??? See Note #2)

Heat 1 was a shocker as former 400m hurdler Brandon Johnson got the surprise win and a huge pr of 1:44.85. Johnson’s previous best was 1:46.23 from last year, his first season where his focus was the 800m. Johnson is a former world junior silver medalist in the 400m hurdles and was 6th in the 2008 Olympic Trials at 400m hurdles.

NOTE: Kenya’s Felix Kitur initially won heat 1, but was DQ’d with a lane violation. It would have been a big PR for him as tilastopaja.net lists his PR as 1:46.51.

NOTE #2 (5/20 edit): We received an email from a visitor informing us that Kitur was actually reinstated after initially being DQ’d. We checked the official results to confirm and now Johnson and Ktur are both listed as first place with identical times. (See revised results below.)

QT #1: Michael Rutt prd in 3rd place at 1:45.08 and so did Mark Wieczorek in 4th (1:45.36). Wieczorek’s pr was bittersweet as he just missed the World Championship “A” standard of 1:45.30.
