That’s a good time but we got Graham Blanks and Nico Young who have both run faster as collegians. Cole is fantastic in the 1500, but expected way more out of him in the 5k than this.
I think maybe he was expecting sub 13 or close to 13 flat based on that 8:05 2 mile but it's not clear where exactly Hocker is in his training cycle, 13:08 isn't earth shatttering but hardly disappointing or a cause for concern imo
+ if he is smart he was going back to bread & butter work after indoors and isn't super sharp yet. I think it is a good time and hopefully he runs on a sub 3:30, sub 7:30, sub 13 level when the season gets going for real.

Maybe a bit slower 5000m will mean a bit faster 800m fitness?
How about a different perspective?
How cool that Cole Hocker and Cooper Teare showed up at a little invite at Wake Forest for some early season track work.
It was great for the fans with only 4 runners in the race, 3 of them pacers, with buddy Teare taking Hocker through 3600m and Hocker finishing alone. Hocker just missed the Olympic standard of 13:05, finishing in 13:07.
What a treat for the fans under the lights in great weather.
Isn't that a PR for Hocker. Who complains about a PR? I'm sure Hocker can run faster and wanted to run faster, but I'm sure he's happy to take a PR all day long.
They probably thought he had a shot at slipping under the standard if he felt good. Didn't quite do it but there are worse ways to start your season in mid April than a small PB

Hocker is a 1500m specialist and ran 29 seconds faster than Graham yesterday running by himself. You can’t go on past performances with Blanks, who is recovering from injury and is only 60 days out from the trials. Young is a great runner but if the 5k trials race is tactical he has to be concerned about Hocker’s closing speed. Hocker ran well, solo.

2/10 troll, you’re getting some bites. It’s April. Hocker just shaking off some rust and seeing where fitness is at. He ran a couple tenths slower two years ago around this time of year at Stanford. Similar race to this but Cooper finished that one. A great result for this early in the season off heavy training.
