Why does it matter if Oregon is good or not? People are so obsessed with Jerry and Oregon for no reason.

I wanted to see him compete this spring.

Even the students at the winning schools don't care.

Track just isn't a team sport, bunch of individuals and you add em up. There is no best team. At least an individual title is meaningful

This makes me happy. The type of person who would go to Oregon is not someone who I want to succeed. That the mandatory nike doping program these people are on is being wasted is a good thing.

Why would you be happy at someone else’s trouble? Might be time to reevaluate some things, man.

A good cross country team and a good track team going for a conference title or national title absolutely care about the team aspect. Thinking only individually is the mindset for people on crappy teams.

Pursuing individual glory instead of team victory is endemic of our current society. The 2020s make the "Me!" generation of the 1970s look like shy introverts. A lot of star athletes feel that they pull the team up simply by running well and scoring points. They don't establish relationships or make an effort to blend into the team culture. On the surface, the Oregon men seem like a collection of mercenaries rather than a team oriented collective.

I wonder if the 2024 class is having regrets choosing Oregon.

My question is what happened to Jerry? Dude had a solid college program. Did he forget what 19 year olds can handle and start training them like 24 year olds?

the "team aspect" is entirely made of spirit and morale. Outside the relays, there is nothing about working together as a team. Each indivdual goes out and performs.

Nobody cares who the best team is, except whoever is on that team. There are no fans, and losing teams aren't devastated.

Back in the day, it was often like this for Oregon. They'd have a few top athletes who would qualify for NCAAs, but being distance oriented, rarely could compete for a title with the southeastern sprint schools. Those schools are perennial winners because of recruiting, with football still a factor.

Oregon got nationally competitive after ramping up its recruiting, not because the athletes got better at teamwork.

No penalty at all.

I want Oregon to be good because I am a fan of the sport and think it’s good if some of the most talented high school runners in history have a chance to reach their potential instead of being overtrained and constantly injured all because of a stubborn coach.

Damn right.

The Oregon name, the facilities, etc., will always draw a certain number of elite athletes. That said, word travels quickly, and so if prospective recruits are seeing injured runners and transfers and decommits that will eventually weigh on recruiting. It seems to be less of an issue thus far on the women's side. I think Elmore running 15:15 after Shalane coming aboard is positive news for recruits.
