Before any of that, and during that, Rodman gained notoriety for his physical play, rebounding prowess, relentless defense and ability to do a role and plug holes that no one else could. His antics unfortunately are always what comes to mind, but behind all that is one of the most underrated players of all time simply because he was the best at the job he did. The ultimate role player for all the unglamorous work.

With that said, looking at it in that light, which runner compares through that lens…it has to be Ben Bruce. The ultimate teammate always sacrificing for the greater good of the team.

The easy answer is that there’s no direct parallel. Rodman was a huge star in a huge sport so people paid attention to what he did and he used that spotlight for edgy antics. He was in the mainstream news and on the cover of tabloids. Meanwhile he was winning NBA championships as well as individual awards. People don’t care nearly as much about running and individual runners are way more easily dismissed from the sport in particular and public discourse in general when they fade away for whatever reason. However, if you want to force it there are elements of Rodman that could be compared to various runners. I’m going to come way out of left field here and say…. Nick Symmonds. Not so edgy but he seeks the spotlight and has had a moment or two of mainstream coverage (Paris Hilton).
