My university cut XC and track :(

I would transfer. You might be limited given its already april, so I'd be looking for a spot on another team right away. Your only other option would be to form a nirca club or something.

After my freshman cross country season it looked very much like the school was going to drop cross country. There were six of us who were freshmen. We'd just begun getting adjusted to the school and classes, maybe beginning to get to know a few people who weren't in the team. We thought we'd need to decide whether to stay and have only outdoor track, there was no indoor, or transfer to a place where there was cross country knowing we'd have to start over. y

There had been no sophomores in our team that year. For seniors there was obviously no problem and it seemed like the juniors would stay because they'd likely have lost too many credits if they transferred. Luckily at the last minute we managed to salvage the sport. But you can't count on that happening for you.

Looking back, I think I'd have transferred even though I badly didn't want to. One reasons I went to the school I did was because I loved cross country and I would lose few if any credits. If I'd been one of the juniors it would have been hard to justify transferring for one season. In your spot I think I'd definitely transfer if I was a freshman and probably if I was a sophomore. Beyond that I'd probably look into a few other schools and see exactly how many credits wouldn't transfer.

A difference in your situation from mine though is that you're in Los Angeles. There are races piled on top of races there that you can run. But they won't be the same as running for your school is.

all due respect but the time for this was months ago when they were theorized for the chopping block. then you could maybe change something. the decision is out, the axe has already fallen. short of a billionaire offering to single handedly fund your team, it's done. if running is like part of your being, then skedaddle to a school with a program. i respect the team spirit and loyalty but i'd be spending my time working on transfer options if running is integral.

Your decision is: Do you like LMU more than you like running?

College running is all fine and good but, will leaving LMU cost you academic aid dollars or create fiscal hardship for your family? Where would you go? Do they offer your major (especially if you are in LMU's film and television program)? Is that team worth it or will they also be making cuts? Do they even have roster spots available?

It's an awful situation and I can't say that I am surprised based on their AD's attitudes and the way that they handled recruiting when my kid was interested a few years ago. It's a beautiful campus and a great location but we got a weird vibe from that place.

Just run for fun and go to class

there are tons of Big West/WCC/WAC colleges within a short drive from LMU. reach out to the coaches there. Pepperdine is literally across the street from you. You could walk over there right now and knock on the XC coaches door. Be proactive, start contacting coaches ASAP.

but if you really want to stay at LMU I bet they have a club XC team., and if not consider starting one.

You have little to no chance of reversing the decision, the school always wins in those situations. Brown and Clemson are the only teams I can think of that won out.

Up to you whether to stay if you like the school, but if my team was ripped away from me I'd have a huge problem giving that school another cent of tuition money.

Stay at LM, run college meets unattached, race road, race all the LA meets.

I dont understand american college running. Why do you need your university to have an official programme just to run? They didnt take your legs away. If you want to compete cant you carry on doing that? Is the term running unattached?

Unattached is tough. Top meets don't allow it unless you are elite. It costs a lot of money to travel to Stanford or BU or Florida on your own. You don't have access to an indoor tracks for training. You don't have teammates.

Recently, there have been a number of schools, DIII-DI, that have started XC and track programs. It's a way to attract tuition paying students in the current ultra competitive higher education market. I understand that the NCAA requires participating programs to adhere to certain requirements that add costs, but it seems like athletic departments can operate programs so that they are a net gain to the schools.

Obviously, the schools and athletic departments that cut programs feel differently, but I find it very surprising that schools like LMU with track and field rosters of 50+ students are losing money by sponsoring the programs.
