LA Olympic officials are worried bus totals will cost more than $1 billion for 2028 Olympics. That's 95k per athlete!!

Guessing they need more busses for the spectators and the millions of residents and overall traffic mediation during that time. But that's assuming they don't just make everyone in the city stay home for three weeks.

The OPs source is fox news misinformation. The money goes to rail and subways, which are not buses, and won't be torn down, no matter how hard Fox spins in circles.

So to be clear because people are really dense, people besides athletes are allowed to use transit.

It’s unfortunate that LA’s leaders have the hubris to think their city is capable of hosting such an event without comprehensive transportation infrastructure. Even Paris is struggling to prepare its city for the massive influx of spectators and competitors. Don’t get me wrong - I’m really excited to see the Olympics hosted in the US in a major city. But the costs and impacts of the games are decades-spanning and crush any normal operation of the city for its regular citizens. I can only hope this has a net-positive impact by being the impetus for updating LA’s various public services.

Those projects have been planned for decades. They connect "urban sprawlers" to work locations. The rail line adds an extension from Van Nuys and Sylmar (urban sprawl). The subway work will add stations at UCLA/Westwood, the VA Hospital and Century City and Rodeo Drive.

The used to be light rail in L.A. (The Red Cars [Pacific Electric Railway] which were electric powered) which was bought by an oil barron who shut it down because gasoline cars were the future.

He has no clue about transportation in L.A. The old electric Red Cars actually allowed for urban sprawl. That extensive system (and many others in the U.S.) was bought by oil people with the intention of shutting them down to push freeway construction along faster -- because vehicles on freeways use oil, just buy a gasoline car and the future is smog.

This is what often happens with Games. Projects that really have little to do with the Games themselves get funded and that money is lumped into the cost of the Games. In some cases these infrastructure items would have been done anyway and maybe gets accelerated.

How is the CA bullet train coming along?

A big question is why is federal money being used for a local project?

Didn't they host this before? And they've created an entire mass transit system since then. So they should be able to handle it I think.

Will ticket disbursement be equitable?

I watched an extended news story on this last night. The MTA is looking for $900 mil-$1 bil for 2700 MTA buses, which would nearly double their fleet. They believe they need these in addition to the $900 in subway improvements (funded by the federal goverment) to get spectators around the City. I understand the subway improvements will be a permanent "benefit" (though it'll be forever underutilized in LA), but I don't see how the MTA would need 5,000 transit buses after the Olympics leave. Smells a little to me like they're using the event to buy a crapload of buses for to move spectators, athletes, staff, etc., then get rid of older buses when the event is over.

LA has a lot of facilities, so they're not building that many new venues. However, after watching the news reports last night, I did wonder how they pulled it off (I was in college in '84) without the subway and a bazillion buses? They did open up freeways by encouraging some businesses to alter hours or shut down, and tried to limit the number of trucks on the roadways. But by and large, people got around to venues by car.

Sorry to hear you’re too poor and lazy to live in CA. I live in Irvine and I love it when the poor and lazy leave the state because they aren’t smart enough and don’t work hard enough. You are right though. The games will be a massive bust. That $900m they got will be a massive boondoggle. I would be surprised if less than $400m goes into the pockets of administrators. They’ll probably build one tiny $300m subway and pocket the rest and say “we did a great job.”
