No you don't have to stop. What if you don't stop? Security personnel need to be very thoughtful before they place their hands on someone.
This has been tested by off-duty law enforcement, Walmart.
You paid for it. Feel free to walk out the door. I have tested this at Walmart. I usually stop and allow store personnel to check my stuff. Sometimes, I don't have time and I have said I don't have time for this nonsense. No one arrested me. No one tackled me.
When I pay for my stuff, it’s mine, right? Why should I have to prove to anyone that it’s rightfully mine?
Thank you for raising this issue; it annoys me. Where I live, this is usually done by staff at stores operating in the seedier parts of the city and the ghettos, rarely in the suburbs. I'm no lawyer, but our law is based on Roman Dutch law, and at uni, we were taught that ownership passes once the money for the goods has been exchanged and delivery has occured in line with a contract of sale and law of property.
Side note, we don't have a Costco. However since I spend most of time on letsrun, I bought some Costco stock in 2020 as you lot are always talking about them.
Look at it this way - the fact they do this probably serves as a deterrent at some level and discourages theft. You are a member and if they operate more efficiently by minimizing theft, they may be able to keep prices as low as possible, and you thereby benefit. So, instituting this practice benefits you one one level.
When I pay for my stuff, it’s mine, right? Why should I have to prove to anyone that it’s rightfully mine?
Do you ever read what you sign, Costco is so specific about it that there is no confusion. You MUST show your receipt on exit, per YOUR contract. If you don't want to show a receipt, cancel your membership and don't shop there.
Walmart is different, you DO NOT have to show your receipt there as you have no contract with them. Once you buy something at Walmart, it is yours and if they stop you and you refuse to show your receipt and they detain you and call the police, they would need RAS (reasonable articulable suspicion) that a crime has occurred, is occurring, or is about to occur and you have no obligation to assist them in their investigation by showing your receipt. If they arrest you and you then show your receipt, they could very easily be sued. You could also just not be a dick and show your receipt and be on your way.

Sign? Stop pretending to be an attorney. There are signs in parking lots of hotels: Park at your own risk. Hotel management assumes no responsibility.
Just because a business displays a sign, it does not alter your rights.
Respond to my initial post. What can Costco employees do to you if you walk? Since it is a membership business, store manager will know your name if store manager feels like investigating. Costco, in theory could rescind membership. Do they really want to for a customer who committed no crime? There is no cause for arrest. No crime. You are free to ignore Costco employees checking your receipt.

So asserting your rights is being a dick? I bet that If I were in the US I'd be harassed all the time at Walmarts for obvious reasons.
This is up there with one of the more stupid threads that have been posted here recently. If you haven't shoplifted anything, just show the receipt and be on your way.

Wow, someone that doesn't know the difference between "sign" the verb and "sign" the noun. What an idiot.
As I stated, you SIGNED (the verb) a contract for membership, whether you did it digitally or in person, and that contract states that you must show your receipt or they can cancel your membership, not in theory, in practice. That's the part where I said that if you don't want to show your receipt, don't shop there. To answer your initial post that you apparently posted using a different name, If you just decided to walk through and tell them to jog on, without showing your receipt, the worker would alert management and they would cancel your membership, they wouldn't even chase you as the employees are well trained on this. They know who you are since you just used your card to make the purchase and they would not care about losing your business because you clearly are an azzhole. You are not original. You are not the first person to cry about "your rights." Costco doesn't care. You agreed to the terms, if you don't want to follow them, they aren't going to fight with you, arrest you, or even give 2 sh*ts about you, they'll just cancel you.

As has been pointed out, you agreed explicitly to this in your costco membership. In addition, I'm happy to do it if it keeps shoplifting losers elsewhere.
At other stores where you are not a member and a membership agreement, do as you please.

Or what? No contract provision allowing them to physically stop you would be enforceable.
About all they could do is cancel your contract, seek civil damages, etc.

Have you worked retail? What makes you believe the majority of theft is due to customers? Two or three bad employees, especially if they conspire with each other can rip off a store for weeks, months and even a few years. You can change your handle poster, but you have offered no evidence anyone can legally stop you, Costco.

Okay, then am I free to swipe a big fat vertical line through my Costco membership agreement after reading it? Would certainly be fitting, now wouldn't it?
