I’m interested in some advice on what times/distances I should target as a relatively inexperienced 43-year-old male runner.
My background: I ran a little bit of track (800m/1500m) in my early teens but never very seriously/competitively. I then ran very little until the age of 30 when I trained a bit and ran a 44 minute 10k. I then ran little again until late 2019, at the age of 38, when I started running regularly (3-4 times/week) but in an unstructured way without a training plan. By early 2020 I’d managed to run 18:30 for a 5k at parkrun, sub-40 for 10k a couple of times, and a sub-90 for half-marathon in a training run. I was training for a marathon but along came covid and for various reasons I more-or-less completely stopped running for nearly four years. I started running again regularly at the start of this year. I’m now running 3-4 times a week and have joined a local running club. This means that I’m running with more structure, including 1-2 track sessions (reps) per week, a longer run and an easy run. I’ve managed to run 18:50 at parkrun this year. My Garman VO2 Max is 55. I am unusually tall – 6ft 6 and weigh ~94kg, so although I’m slim and carry little excess weight I’m still a pretty big guy. I can’t train more than 3-4 times/week because of family commitments and work.
My questions are these:
- Given this background and current performance what might be ambitious but not completely unrealistic times to target for the shorter distances (5k, 10k)?
- I’m interested in running longer in the medium term, perhaps starting with a road marathon this year and then some shorter ultras/trail marathons next year. I’m not too bothered about times for these but are my height/weight a barrier to longer distance running?
