She might be close. Valby is currently being compared to 21yr old Megan Keith, or 26yr old Aussie Lauren Ryan, who just ran 30:36.84 and 30:35.66 respectively at The TEN. But that was a Pro race with Pacers.

It will be considerably harder to run close to those times out solo. But Valby is mentally used to toiling away on an Arc Trainer. So…

If Valby breaks the record and pulls the 5K/10K double outdoors, she will enter the stratosphere of collegiate female distance runners.

She will join Karissa Schweizer with six NCAA titles, trailing only Favor and Kipyegon (9), Huber (8), Skieresz and D'Agostino (7).

She will hold the two fastest 5000s ever (the ONLY collegiate sub-15s ever, and both were indoors), the fastest 6K XC time ever at NCAAs with one of the largest winning margins in history, and the outdoor 10,000 record that has held for nearly 15 years. She will have titles in cross country, indoors, and outdoors.

I think only about five women have ever pulled off the 5K/10K double, the last being Dominique Scott about 10 years ago.

Parker Valby is an athlete every American should know and be watching especially given the prevalence of running. Unlike that Iowa basketball player who will fade back into obscurity in the WNBA because no one watches/goes to those games

What if she just cruises to a 33:00 NCAA east qualifier? She's pretty well set for Olympic trials in 5000,

and she will at least have to run 10000 twice more for NCAA, the East meet and nats.

Why would an athlete of that caliber fly across the country and interrupt her sleep schedule just to get a qualifier when she could accomplish that at regionals?

The logic here is she might actually be able to get an Olympic Qualifier. That could affect their approach heading to the Trials If she were to do that.

she looked so good an indoors, like she barely broke a sweat, and she hasn't raced since, so she's fully rested. im curious if there's gonna be a pacer and what pace they set, but it wouldn't surprise me if she gets the Olympic qualifier. i think that's her intention flying all the way across the country.

Besides having the benefit of a paced pro race, both Keith and Ryan had previous practice; Keith ran a 10k road race this past January, and Ryan ran a 10000m race this past December.

Good point, but we just get all psyched for fast times in outdoor, and they don't happen, because they're not needed.

Yes she could have gotten NCAA Q also at sec meet, but then it's 3 10ks in 5 wks for NCAA, plus Usatf.

Good question. I haven’t yet found a replay of last year’s 10000m, but the 5000m Ht 1 had Venters pace it.

Besides stepping up in distance, this is another preparatory practice for Valby, in handling pressure. But athletes do get ill, things happen, etc.

I predict she’ll shoot for a qualifier time and won’t go all out.

What does she have to lose if she goes all-in for the Oly Qualifier? Even if she were to fail, she would likely still make the collegiate qualifier.

30:39 qualifier is a big leap, worth 1212 IAAF points, which is equivalent to a 14:35 5000m. To think that she can run that is to imagine that she had a lot more in the tank at 5000m when she ran 14:52 (1179 pts) and/or that she is much better at 10000 than 5. I think that she is better at 10 than 5, but 30:39 is tough. Then again I live in Florida, so I want to root for her. I'll say 30:47 and possible qualification through IAAF points via NCAA and USATF races.

Of note, Ryan ran a 14:58 in February Indoors before her recent 30:35 in March.
