Just as she did at last year's London Marathon, Jepchirchir (2:24:43) outkicked Assefa (2:24:45) in a fierce final 400 meters as Uruguay's Julia Paternain (2:27:23), who ran in the NCAA at Penn State and Arkansas, was a shocking 3rd. American Susanna Sullivan (2:28:17) was 4th after leading at halfway.

- Long Jump WR Holder Mike Powell suspended indefinitely by the AIU over "safeguarding concerns" Powell was recently working as a college coach in California at Azusa Pacific University, but is now suspended indefinitely from "all activities sanction by World Athletics." The AIU did not say what the safeguarding concern is related to.
*Another report says Powell's ban could be related to an email he allegedly wrote complaining about "safe injection sites" in Canada This is just speculation and it is not confirmed if the email was even written by him. - MB: Wada says Kenya non-compliant with anti-doping code WADA says that Kenya's Anti-Doping Agency hasn't addressed "several critical requirements" from May last year. So they've been non-compliant for over a year, but won't face any consequences until next month?
- Russia reissues arrest warrant for former anti-doping head Grigory Rodchenkov Rodchenkov was the doping whistleblower that helped expose Russia's state-run doping program at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. He has been living in hiding under a witness protection program in the US.

Chebet’s run which included a 27.11 final 200 was one of the highlights on day 1 in Tokyo, alongside an epic gut-it-out win from Ryan Crouser in the shot put (his fifth consecutive global title). There was a surprise in the men’s 100m where South Africa’s Gift Leotlela led all qualifiers by running a 9.87 personal best.

RIP To A Coaching Legend
Daniels had a prolific career as an athlete, coach and exercise scientist. He won two Olympic medals in the modern pentathlon, did exercise testing for various groups including Nike's Athletics West elite team in Eugene and held numerous coaching positions which included advising on the training of Jim Ryun while working with the 1968 US Olympic team and winning seven DIII women's national XC titles while at Cortland. And of course, he indirectly contributed to the coaching of thousands of high school and college athletes through his training book, Daniels’ Running Formula.

She said that she took the test, but that "many questions remain open."
- US shot putter Raven Saunders gets 2 and a half year ban for whereabouts failures Her ban was increased because this is her second anti-doping violation (she just finished serving an 18-month ban for whereabouts failures in 2024).

Plus Noah Lyles edged out Letsile Tebogo in a 200m thriller, 19.74 to 19.76, as Frenchman Jimmy Gressier outkicked Grant Fisher to win the 3,000 in 7:36.78 to Fisher's 7:36.81. Jessica Hull tied up big time in the 1500 and lost by 0.03 and Audrey Werro ran 1:55 to win a tight women's 800. Three years ago, USATF published a document on its website titled "Journey to Gold: Strategic Roadmap to 2028." The idea: capitalize on a six-year window bookended by two rare opportunities -- a home World Championships in 2022 and a home Olympics in 2028 -- to grow the sport domestically. The aim, spelled out in a purple box on page 1, was to make track & field the country's fifth-most followed sport by LA28. Jonah Koech wasn't even supposed to be in Sunday's 1500. As they approached the bell, he was in 13th out of 17. A lap later, he was the champion. He is just the third American man to win a Diamond League 1500/mile and the first runner sponsored by Under Armour to win a DL race. His 3:37.27 pre-race pb is also the slowest of any man to win a DL 1500/mile.
