Thanks to the great work of Jonathan Gault, LetsRun has learned that the Sha'Carrri Richardson case has not been cleared as many media outlets reported. Seattle prosecutors did charge Richardson with misdemeanor fourth-degree assault and that Richardson is scheduled to appear in court in SeaTac, Wash., on September 2.
He was telling me from day 1 that the case hadn't been "cleared."
It shows you the lazy state of modern journalism. There are actual very few journalists left. When one actually reports something, they will occasionally make a mistake but then others re-write that report and don't cite it and it's all treated as fact.
The original police report did say cleared or had that form checked but Jonathan learned right away that just meant like the police work had been cleared. It meant nothing about whether charges were filed or not. That was up to the prosecutors who had 72 hours to make a decision.

Regardless of severity, if she's found guilty of a domestic violence crime would that constitute a SafeSport violation? I'm not super familiar with this code or anything but my first thought was -- is she going to be allowed to compete in a USA kit in Tokyo while under criminal charges? It seems even having pending charges or a warrant is a violation. Curious if someone knows more.

Possibly a violation, but it’s the type of violation that would typically result in non-public actions such as safety plans and closer monitoring during Worlds, not a suspension that would prevent her from competing.
Having a pending charge of something like sexually abusing a child is the type of thing that makes someone immediately ineligible to participate in the Olympic movement. It’s specific types of charges, not any criminal charge.
Most of what happens with USATF Safe Sport and the US Center for SafeSport is not public. Don’t assume that lack of public action means nothing has happened.
*I have no inside knowledge of this case this is pure speculation*

its clearly a violation of the code, under two counts; pending charges and bullying behaviour. but what are the sanctions?
this does seem very heavy handed though. she has been publicly humiliated (if she notices such things) and lost her boyfriend. surely a bit of counselling and move on?
If this were reversed, and this were Christian Coleman, his career would be done already.
I don't get why people think that they are so brilliant when they point out things like this.
Yes, men and women are treated differently. Why? Because men and women are different. A man is very much a phystical threat to a woman. The reverse is not true. It's the samse reason why child abuse is treated so seriously.
I'm not saying we should allow women to abuse men. I'm just pointing out the obvious size differences.
Nike loves to give money to all the questionable athletes who's character is suspect. Sprinters think they are a "holy grail". Distance runners and field event athletes a different breed who don't go around strutting their presence.

Really? Is child abuse really treated just as seriously when the victim is a teenage boy and the perpetrator an adult woman? No, for the same reason as you gave I suppose: men and women are different and treated differently; in this case presumably because “boys enjoy it”, right? For some reason, we pretend that girls don’t enjoy willing sex with an adult.
As for DV abusers, size should be immaterial. Men are not always bigger than their women, and even if they are, abusers feed on the victim’s mental vulnerability, so the victim tolerates the abuse even if they could well respond physically with enough force to deter the abuser’s violence.

This response is stunningly ignorant. If she's willing to have a go at him like that in public, what has she done to him behind closed doors? To assume that men are bigger thus they are less in danger is incredible. Guns don't care how big you are. No indication weapons were involved here, but in domestic abuse things often escalate to where weapons are being used. And physical abuse aside, I would argue the biggest issue here is the incredible amount of psychological abuse Sha Carri put Coleman through. There should be no difference in how this is viewed, treated and policed. But here you are, head honcho on a prominent running media outlet, telling everybody to "chill, it ain't that bad." The hypocrisy surrounding this story is surreal. If she was 2 tenths slower two years ago, she would not be so fortunate to have the protection from the public the way she has now. Its as if because she won a big race, the person she was before and the person she is now gets excused.
