He didn't know what kind of shape he was in, but respect for at least racing even if he's in horrible shape right now. (for him) I don't think he would do well in the 5k either, though he could make it to the final. To be honest, the best thing to do is probably to cut the season and just focus on recovering his achilles completely.
If Josh Kerr did the same thing, he would be getting raked over the coals on this board
tbh I'd be glad he'd be racing at all in that case. Kerr especially only likes running when he's in good shape so seeing him do something like what Jakob did today would be a real nice change of character

Josh is a more consistent performer than Jakob over the last 5 years in the 1500. He always shows up ready.

“If I'm on the start line, I know that I'm a gold candidate.”

No he wouldn't. Kerr hardly races as is. If he showed up to Worlds to defend his title after a bad build he would get major credit.
But he wouldn’t get credit because (unlike Jakob) he isn’t likable or interesting
I dont get it. People have watched the (more recent) tv doc about jakob, or his youtube stuff, and the word we're using is likable? Yeah he can be interesting or funny in the narrow context of his sport discussion, but outside of that its hard not to categorize him as a jerk.
I concur. I am deeply appreciative of Jakob for giving it a go today. If he didn't, I wouldn't have had the pleasure of watching him get bounced in the prelim!

Jakob is relatable and his life is something others can aspire to. He is married with a child at 24. He lives in his hometown and trains full time with his brothers. He is successful at his chosen profession. He has interests outside of running.
Comapre this to Josh Kerr who lives an ocean away from his hometown. He’s been engaged since 2021–solidly on the DINK / acedia life track.

You're telling me that if Kerr was out for 4 months, dropped cryptic hints on his injury status, hyped himself up on social media nonetheless, then showed up and did not even advance out of the HEATS, he would NOT be clowned by letsrun? Are you insane? There would be 20 threads sh*tting all over him by now.
What's the virtue of being married with a child if you're going to neglect your wife and child by spending lots of time away in other countries? Jakob's wife was struggling so much she literally posted a video of herself crying at how overwhelmed she felt.

Sybau, you know this is bs. Nobody wants to watch athletes dud (unless you're hate watching).

See—people shouldn’t post so much online—gotta work through that those things face-to-face with loved ones.
It doesn’t make sense one would be overwhelmed when you 1) have one child 2) love close to family and 3) can afford child care.
But I also don’t know what it’s like for my spouse to be gone for large chunks of time. It comes with the job—but it’s certainly tough from a relational standpoint.
