I had a few opportunities to hear him speak and break bread with him. He was a solid scientist, solid coach, and excellent story teller.
He also did a lot to get coaches thinking more about science as a basis for making coaching decisions.
He did a lot to help "hobby joggers" improve.
At one conference he spoke at, he regaled the audience with his description of the Olympic trials for modern pentathlon (he won a bronze in the team event) and the horse he drew almost kept him off the team.
RIP Coach.
PS: He also won a silver medal.

Wow. His training plans were a huge influence on those of us who ran in the 80s and 90s before every training plan was posted online.
This is a big loss to the sport :-(
19 years old and can confirm it's still a big influence today. My hs coach had success with the Daniel's Running Formula plan back when he was in high school, and he decided to have us follow the 1600-3200 plan almost verbatim last winter and spring. My teammates and I all had the most improvement of our careers. No injuries and we all dropped 10 seconds or more in the 1600. The training plan might not be perfect for everyone but it will get the job done. And unless you're running 100 mile weeks, I bet his training will do a whole lot more for you than double threshold.
So incredibly grateful for Daniels. His book is a big reason I'm running in college now, as I'm sure it was for countless other runners before me. Legendary coach and seems like a great guy. RIP.
Jack Daniels did more to rescue US running from its trough in the 90s than anyone else. Thousands of high school runners set massive PRs using his principles.
RIP. Not crazy to say that he might have had the single biggest impact on modern day American distance running than anyone else. Jack Daniels running formula is universally known in the community.
