"A lot of brands didn't want to see this go away," said Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa, who won the girls race in 1994. "They didn't care how — they just didn't want to see it go away."
The article says "How Brooks rescued HS running championships at Balboa Park" not Stamps, Torres, and Williams. Give credit where credit is due, looks like Garrett Heath/Brooks.

Waste of money. The meet was dead 7 years ago and more like a sub elite high school race now. The west region is pathetic
Brooks had the winning bid, but there were a few offers on the table. The organizers are the names mentioned above. They deserve the majority of the credit.

One thing to keep in mind is that Jesse Williams used to be the sports marketing manager at Brooks before he went out on his own to start Sound Running. He is still well connected to Brooks as Brooks sponsors several events that he runs.
Why is this needed when there is already RunningLane? Now we have three meats when theyre should be only one.
NXN = National team championship.
RunningLane = Consolation prize nationals for good teams coming out of tough regions, teams on the cusp who didn't quite make it, decent teams in tough states who need a post-season goal, and others.
Brooks XC = A credible threat to steal Nike's lunch if Nike gets lazy about putting on a quality event or if it puts the NXN stream behind a Flotrack paywal. A historical claim to be the national individual championship that might be plausible again at some point.

Ken Stone has been an excellent sports writer for years.

Bids?
Not really clear who was the owner of Foot Locker Nationals. So who conducted the bidding, and how much were they paid for the rights to the Kinney/Foot Locker history.
It's also not really clear who the new owner is. Will Brooks own and operate it (like Nike), or are they just a sponsor.
Did the new group really purchase rights to Foot Locker & History, or just start up this new race to fill the void.

Many unclear points.
I’m wondering the same thing — is it Brooks, Sound Running (Jesse Williams ‘ company), Global Athletics, Stamps’ company, or someone else?
