How Would You Have Trained Caroline Wozniacki for the NYC Marathon?
From behind... definitely would have trained the h#ll outta her from behind.
How about we look at that list with the endurance athletes excluded. I've removed the cyclists and rowers, and sorted the remaining performances by time.
Jenson Button, Formula One driver and 2009 World Champion, 2012 Honolulu Marathon (2:58:34)
Clancy Rudeforth, Australian rules footballer, 2005 New York City Marathon (3:15:32)
Apolo Ohno, U.S. Olympic short-track speed skater, 2011 New York City Marathon (3:25:12)
Heikki Kovalainen, ING Renault F1 driver, 2007 New York City Marathon (3:36:56)
Amélie Mauresmo, former professional tennis player, 2010 New York City Marathon (3:40:20)
Pat Tillman, former Arizona Cardinals safety, 2000 Avenue of The Giants Marathon (3:48:48)
Pavel Nedved, 2003 European Footballer of the Year winner and former Juventus F.C. football player, 2012 Prague Marathon (3:50:02)
Roger Craig, former San Francisco 49ers running back, 2004 Chicago Marathon (3:54:00)
Justin Leonard, Golfer, 2001 Dallas White Rock Marathon (3:54:40)
Kerri Strug, gymnast, 2008 New York City Marathon (3:56:06)
Kajsa Bergqvist, former high jumper, 2010 New York City Marathon (3:56:57)
Michael Waltrip, 2001 and 2003 Daytona 500 champion, 2005 Las Vegas Marathon (3:59:23)
Jarno Trulli, Formula One driver, 2000 New York City Marathon (4:02:21)
Jennie Finch, U.S. Olympic softball player, 2011 New York City Marathon (4:05:26)
Amani Toomer, former New York Giants wide receiver, 2010 New York City Marathon (4:13:45)
Kyle Petty, NASCAR Nextel Cup driver, 2005 Las Vegas Marathon (4:18:34)
Edwin van der Sar, retired Manchester United goalie, 2011 New York City Marathon (4:19:16)
Mats Wilander, retired tennis player, 1997 New York City Marathon (4:19:19)
Lynn Swann, former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, 1993 New York City Marathon (4:26:41)
Ingemar Johansson, former professional heavyweight boxer, Stockholm Marathon (4:40.12)
I'd say 9 min pace (3:55) is a good goal.
She don't need no training.

I think the guy who said 9-9:30 pace might be more accurate. That would be 4-4:10.
One month ago she ran 11,5 miles in 1h26m. Based on that I'd say she definitely should be able to go sub 4.
She does a ton of speedwork in her training for tennis, so I'd mostly have her do easy jogging. 3-5 miles a day, with one long run and/or tempo run per week or after a tournament is over.
So if she's got a tournament, I'll have her do a long run the day after, or a tempo run two days after, depending how she's feeling.
She makes so much money playing tennis and athletic careers are so short that honestly I wouldn't want to screw it up.
"definitely should be able to go sub 4".
don't see it based on the LRC article where it says the most trained was 13.1 miles!
Even the Hanson training program requires runs over half marathon distance.
There is a huge difference between 13.1 training runs and 20 miles.
With even ONE run over 18 miles, you'd be right.
General fitness won't get you there.
IMO, they'll be lucky to beat the Oprah line of 4:29.
Hope for the best, but that is not wise training and will require a lot of walking to get it done.
I spoke to John Honerkamp today, an old roommate of mine in DC, and he's actually going to be pacing Caroline.
He paced Ohno as well and said he misled Ohno early how fast he was going to hold him back.
John wasn't specific but after talking to him and reading this thread I think sub 4 for sure. She's got to beat Pat Tillman right?
3:26:33
Not bad.
Indeed not bad, roughly 2-minute positive split.
As Hutchings would say "A useful result for Wozniacki"
I'll add ditto for Bob Kennedy.
Did we see a couple of non-pro's sneak into the top 10 American finishers for both genders?
