Fake news: Kenenisa Bekele has not yet been named to the Ethiopian Olympic Team, the team has not yet been selected

Our apologies for linking to an article earlier saying that Kenenisa Bekele has been named to the Ethiopian Olympic Marathon team. The team has not yet been announced.

An outlet in Kenya original published the story which wasn't true. An overseas ESPN site picked up the story and then a Canadian running website linked to that as well and then we at LetsRun linked to that story as well last night. We definitely shouldn't have linked to it and featured it on the homepage because on our own LetsRun.com Supporters Club podcast yesterday (Friday) we said we had reached out to Bekele's agent Jos Hermens about the reports and Hermens forwarded us the response he got when he reached out to Bekele about the published reports. Bekele's response was this was "fake news". The expectation is we may have the team announced this week.

Alright. Well Ethiopia would be STUPID not to pick Bekele. He is the 2nd fastest Ethiopian marathoner this year. Beyond that though, the Olympic rematch of Bekele and Kipchoge will get eyes on the tv - publicity is good for Ethiopian distance running. Not many will tune it to watch Addisu Gobena, but former world record holder and gold medalist Bekele in a rematch with the man who got silver against him is worth seeing.

Apology accepted. I think many of us were caught up in the excitement and overlooked the lack of widespread reputable reporting on it because we want it to be true so badly. Here’s hoping he does indeed get selected.
