We prefer to have 1 thread per subject matter and have merged three threads into 1. The 2nd thread was entitled, "Why does Jakob talk so much trash?" The third thread was titled, "New Jakob Interview: Olympics should be “a walk in the park”, calls some competitors “a**holes and idiots”:
Norwegian track sensation Jakob Ingebrigtsen has a love affair with the European Championships. It was six years ago in Berlin when he annoucned himself to the world when, aged just 17, he shocked the field to take 1500m and...
Starting at 10:00 he says defending his Olympic title should be a walk in the park if he doesn’t get sick or injured, and appears to take a shot at certain competitors again. Thoughts?
This is another rephrasing of the one thing he says over and over again. "I am the best so I will win". It is not new or interesting each time he says it. It is expected, it is the only thing he says when asked.
It does not matter that he loses sometimes, he will continue to say it. Does not matter how much he believes it or not, he is not backing off the position now.
FWIW Kerr will always say the same thing too, with a little more modesty, approximately "I am good enough to win the race".
1) His training could be going very well. He wouldn’t be talking like this if he didn’t think he had a pretty good chance of winning. That being said he did give himself an out, with the injury or sickness comment and he can easily fall back on his preseason injury if Kerr out kicks him again.
2) He’s going to try and win emphatically and control as much of the race as possible. I think this could actually play into Kerr or Nuguse’s hands if he does a lot of the leading to break them and they have the fitness to get around him with 200m to go.
Overall I think Jakob and Josh may be too focused on each other and another contender could steal it. I think if someone upsets them it would be either Nordås, Nuguse, Hocker if he’s finally reached sub 3:30 fitness, or Laros if he makes another big jump.
Jakob needs a 2 second fitness gap on the field if he hopes to win from the front, and as we've seen the last two years, he doesn't have it yet. I can't see how he gets it by this summer after being injured for part of the year.
This is badass when you dominate every single championship and you are the favorite, but I think there’s a chance Jakob doesn’t even medal so it’s just childish arrogance to me
Yeah I didn't know if this was just clickbait or trolling but it's 100% not - direct quote
"I think some people are just erm, a$$holes and being idiots".
Wow. Ironically, he immediately then says "for me it's all about myself and the sport of running and trying to be as good as I can be" - but of course the irony is that it's clearly more than that or you wouldn't be so concerned with people to the point of calling them a$$holes and idiots.
I said this a while ago on the large thread Rojo posted about Jakob comments on his WR aspirations etc, this more than ever sounds like a 23 year old kid trying to find himself and just not having the experience or emotional intelligence to articulate it the right way. And we've all been there at some point in our life. I mean he's really living an insular existence - he grew up in a town of 70'000 people, all he's ever done in his life is run and excel in what is lonely sport where you are constantly in your own head. I think he would probably love to get on with a guy like Josh Kerr (who surely he is referencing) and there is probably a part of Kerr's journey that Jakob wishes he had something similar - like a college experience in the US, not being in this weird (and as we know at times abusive) family-exclusive training group.
I just feel like those comments in particular are more reflective of sadness and frustration vs anything malicious, even though they come off as being super unnecessary on the surface. He's a great runner and one of the greatest we've ever seen already in his short career - but everything comes at a cost. Everything.
Oh please. Kerr went on multiple rants about Jakob before Jakob even said anything. If someone is trash talking you for winning once while you outclass them in every race, vaguely calling them “a$holes and idiots” without naming them is tame. He only says its about him to reassure us and himself he is not affected by the “attacks”
