I still don't understand why Rupp moved up from the distances where he was in the mix to be the best. He was world leader one year with a 26:44! His marathons, even a 2:06, just don't compare, even if they're worth more money.
If you can't close in a 54 anymore on the track it doesn't matter how aerobically fit you are. He probably couldn't thrown down a good TT but that really doesn't matter anymore
* Marathon is more prestigious than 5000m & 10000m.
* Training for 5000m & 10000m since 1972 Olympics to this today is more grueling than Marathon training. When G Rupp was training for 5000m & 10000m, Al Sal had G Rupp weight training as did S Coe. When G Rupp was training for 5000m & 10000m, Al Sal had G Rupp doing 800m repeats in the following manner: 1st lap, 59.xx & last lap, sub-55.
Marathon training basically: Pleasant (10 to 25) mile runs on rural roads.
Hope his back injury can be addressed and treated. His association with Salazar prevents me from being a fan. Too many “TUEs” and alleged passport coverups.
I’d like to see what Rupp’s career would have amounted to if he did it with an honest long term coach.
Interesting. Look at the rather pedestrian times of the current American marathon record holder, 24 yr old Brazilian DD Nascimento. Nonetheless, with his marathon times, he would be a running mega-star if he were from the US.
In the long run, when he decides to leave the sport- it will be a net positive. Olympic medal aside, he hasn't done anything in the marathon all while be shrouded in personal mystery, scandal, and blurred legality.
I'm excited for the refreshing group of guys coming up. Mantz and Fisher are infinitely more fun to root for. Galen is a heel and should never have been the face of American marathoning. How we didn't have anyone at or faster than 2:08 in his time is mind boggling
What’s mind boggling is that US marathoning has deteriorated to the point that no two US runners each running 1/2 each would have a chance to beat Kipchoge. How about three of them each running 1/3 of the race? What three guys right now can beat EK? Fisher can’t run because he’s not yet a marathon runner.
As for Rupp, it’s over. It’s like my old car, stuff just starts breaking and I keep repairing and hoping for the best and after the 4th repair in 2 years you realize you should have traded it in when you started.
Maybe it'll be smart for Galen to hang up the Alphaflys instead of continuing to embarass himself. He doesn't want to turn into Des, with a big forehead and oversized sunglasses at pressers before laying an egg..
I lost some disc height in the L5-S1 but after about 7-8 months of intense PT, the pain completely went away. Didn’t want to go through surgery and every doctor told me once we start cutting it’s more likely they’ll need to cut in the future. That was 3 years ago. I then spent another year or so working with a personal trainer after which running started to feel a lot more ‘normal’ as in I had a full stride and it felt like I was pushing off my toe with power. I would imagine a pro runner like Galen will have a speedier recovery because this is his job, he has access to the best doctors and trainers in the world, and he can dedicate 100% of his day to it. That said - the outcome really depends on how his body recovers from this.
Rupp had a great career and should be proud. He showed us that it’s possible to put the hard work in and compete with the East Africans. And he did. Job well done, Galen.
Did he?
I think it's more accurate to say he may have showed us that it’s possible to put the hard work in and compete with the East Africans.
He also may have showed us what's possible if you start giving a talented guy testosterone in HS. Anyone remember this?

Let's don't forget the guy who coached him for his entire successful career is banned from teh sport.
Can someone explain to me how these boards/ moderators/ owners choose to vilify who worked with Salazar vs those they choose to ignore the relationship? As everything Rupp and Hasay did is suspect yet people drool over Ritz even though all his best times from 5k up were with Salazar.
