Former NXN winner Liam Anderson is in the transfer portal after 5 years at Stanford where he did not run well at all. Could be one of the greatest fall offs of all time. Curious to see where he goes.

Just looked.
He is entered as a grad transfer. Pretty much no one is getting into grad school at Stanford. That’s incredibly difficult to do. Of course you enter the portal to talk to coaches at grad programs you applied to. Why wouldn’t you? Big difference between undergrad and grad transfers. Little sensationalist aren’t we?

We get it. How many threads do we need beating him up? He was great in HS, he underperformed in college, got his degree and moving on. Try reading the previous threads on this topic, please. This is old old news.

I’ve been following Liam since his high school days and the last thing I’m trying to do is beat up on him, it’s just a fact that he has fallen off after a stellar high school career. I’m rooting for him and I’d love to see him run well at another school.
It’s also not old news that he’s in the portal, looks like he entered his name today.

I don't mean to pile on him either, but his college career has been a disaster as compared to expectations coming out of high school. I'm sure some will want to blame the coaches, but there has to be more to it than that because it has been dire for 5 years now and pretty much was from the outset. At this point he is running about 4-flat for 1500 and 14:50s for 5000. I'm surprised he has eligibility left and will be even more surprised if any good D1 program wants him.

What were his HS times??? Those college times would barely make it onto a small D1 team. Most juco times are faster. Did he not adjust to college life well or maybe girlfriend/boyfriend problems?

He ran faster in HS than college lol
If I’m doing my math right Anderson should have been recruited by Miltenberg before he came back east to Carolina. Someone correct me if I’m wrong on this. Maybe the replacement coach Ricardio Santos wasn’t for him.
The guy has such a poor reputation you have to wonder how much of it chalks up to pure bad coaching. He seems like a difficult person to work with and as has been said on here many times can’t develop athletes despite the immense talent Stanford recruits. The handful of interactions I’ve had with Santos he’s come off as strangely skittish. Reminds me of a small dog that has gone to the bathroom somewhere it knows it shouldn’t have. And don’t get me started on the head coach JJ…
Not a lot of us had his HS talent but plenty of us have had a similar progression in college. Maybe some of us were at the same parties. My hope is that Liam had a really good time in his undergrad career. It he was posting these times despite leading some sort of monastic runner lifestyle, I’d advise him to make sure he's doing a suitable amount of dumb things for a guy his age. Or if that's covered, take things in the other direction and see what you can do. You’re only young once.

Yeah, Anderson would have been recruited by Milt but Milt left the summer before he arrived. Lots of Santos hate on this board and I've mostly defended him as imo there have been enough good results in the program to give him the benefit of the doubt. Plus most of the Stanford guys post their training on Strava and there's nothing in it that looks obviously problematic. As for Anderson, like I posted earlier he has been such a huge disappointment from the start that I think there's more to it than just "the training sucks."
I do hear from some connections to the program that Santos isn't a warm and fuzzy team-building kind of guy. That might have a negative impact on team culture, but doesn't for me explain someone like Anderson. Seems more like he has been mailing it in for the last few years.
Isn’t he a search and rescue team leader? On helos and organizing real life rescues? 1% of his work in that field is worth more than 100% of some pretty boy pro runner’s career.
Alluding to what runningisjustasport posted above, it looks like Liam has been involved in professional search and rescue work since he was 14 years old, according to this Stanford Report article below. His comparative lack of improvement at the college level in distance running could simply stem from the fact that running is not the number one priority in his life. Per the article, he's spent hundreds of hours volunteering on search and rescue teams in order to save lives. When you dedicate much of your life to that kind of community service, concerns about dropping one's 1500 and 5000 meter times don't have much comparative importance in the greater scheme of things. Stnaford = Where runners go to mediocrity. The reason most of these kids get into running is to make it into a top tier school like Stanford, with out having their parents to buy a new building, library wing, endowed fellowship, etc. They did not go to run as much as they go to get that Stanford diploma.
