Head Track & Field coach Jerry Schumacher meets with the media ahead of the Oregon Twilight.#GoDucksFollow Oregon DucksTwitter/X: @GoDucksInstagram: @GoDucks...
MEDIA: The men's team is in shambles. You get the best talent but then run them into the ground causing injuries. Who has progressed? Simeon Birnbaum? Connor Burns? That kid from Florida who already forgot his name because he is not progressing?
How can you lose in XC to Gonzaga! Yoo could not even get a team to NATS!
So I ask you.....Have you bitten off more than you can chew with this TWO FULL TIME job thing you have going on?
Clearly nervous in his interview. The smiles and head movements are a tell tail sign.
He gained confidence as he focused on a thrower that is doing well.
Finally when asked about his distance program he showed nervous body language once more.
This is the University of Oregon for goodness sakes. He has been given and recruited some of the best distance runners in the country. He has had time to develop them and the opposite of development has happened.
BTC is another story. It’s demise has been tragic.
Baffles me why he took this job in the first place. He had an easy gig going coaching pros, Nike headquarters, great staff, respected huge group, low pressure. Now he has a super high pressure, time intensive, media outreach job. In which he took over a men's team that was lacking in XC, but with great recent track performances from two stellar coaches, the last let go becasue he was so good at his job his two stallions went pro.
This is his first "interview" in months (years??) and it's literally through UO's SPORTS INFORMATION DEPARTMENT. Not exactly hard-hitting journalism and I bet he was obligated to do it since, you know, it's part of his job.
Tbh after his performance at oregon, I am more convinced the doping at BTC was pervasive and beyond just shelby.
The lack of logic behind conspiracy posts like this is mindblowing.
So did Kincaid take the drugs with him to Mike Smith's group? What about Fisher to Utah?
If the BTC was a doping group, I think you wouldn't be seeing the mass exodus as they wouldn't want to leave their supplier.
Go ahead and hate on Jerry and get back to me in 3 years. It reminds me of all of the Vin Lannana haters who pop up on every UVA thread. Look, you can not like Vin personally and be upset that he's incredibly smooth but to doubt that he'd do well at UVA was just plain stupid. Same thing here.
I'll admit Jerry's start at Oregon has been shockingly bad but the reality is you don't win with freshmen male distance runners - period. Get back to me in 3-4 years.
The only thing that worries me like 5% is he needs a little momentum but once he gets that, things will turn around quickly once these guys mature a bit.
From personal experience, I can tell you it can be hard for any coach trying to turn thinigs around in year 2. You don't have a roster full of your recruits and the talent is super young. The key is to make sure guys don't start doubting.

Money. Phil probably gave him some long-term Nike employment guarantees as well
JS: Ego, money.
UofO: bad decision.
PK: bad decision.
Nike: poor management but may have had no say if PK blessed it.
BTC athletes: treated terribly and disingenuously by JS.
UofO athletes: I feel sorry for them. Their best years are being denied.

LOL. What makes you say that? Who was the supplier? Wouldn't the dopers want to leave the group that is now in the focus of USADA?
And if there were some clean runners at BTC, wouldn't they want to leave a group that openly supports their beloved doper and has such a terrible reputation now?
And if the coaches weren't in on it, wouldn't they stop supporting their doper, now that we know that the roids were neither in the burrito (see WADA/AIU/WA/CAS/Tucker/Tygart/...) nor in her supplements (see Shelby's own admission)?
Brian Blutreich's hiring as throws coach, as I said at the time, was going to pay big dividends for Oregon and Jerry Schumacher. Blutreich was a great thrower and his results have been outstanding over time. The women currently have on tfrrs.org #1 in the shot by 3 ft with Jaida Ross, #14 in the discus with Ross and #39, #3 in the hammer with Shelby Moran, a foot off the NCAA leader, and #29 in the javelin. So, they have a predicted 16 points at NCAAs from the weights on the women's side, not bad at all, especially in a program that likely doesn't have too many scholarships left for throwers after all the distance and possibly sprint scholarships. On the men's side, they're doing very little so far, just 16th in the hammer and 96th in the javelin, on track to score no points. If they're not getting throws scholarships on the men's side, too bad football coaches aren't willing to put some big guys out into the throws during track to work on their footwork and power. I would assume that with only 12.6 scholarships on the men's side, vs. 18 or 19 for the women, they are all going to distance and sprint/jumps.

They have whatever money they want for Scholarships with NIL and still can’t get it done

You and Jon Gault have to be the biggest Jerry apologists that exist, to the point that it makes me suspicious of you. I know that statement makes me sound crazy but you have the heaviest scrutiny of every athlete yet the team that deserves the most scrutiny is looked at the in the opposite way by you

Did you even watch it?? What do you mean "gained" confidence when he talked about the thrower? That's literally the first part. Then he goes on to talk about distance crew at the end.
Also anyone who actually has interacted w Jerry- That's how he talks and smiles. He's not nervous and to think the U of O sports information guys would make him nervous is laughable considering his experience on the world stage. You are projecting
Now I won't argue about your sentence thats he's had time to develop some of the best runners - he has and results are very poor so far
