I'm not buying this 4 year rebuilding process. It should have happened instantly. Why couldn't they bring in transfers? Why couldn't they bring in some superstar international freshmen like Dave Smith?
Other coaches have rebuilt within 1-2 years at far small schools with less resources.
Why aren't they even racing their top athletes? The majority of his talented freshmen and sophomores either haven't raced at all, or they've only raced 1-2 times.

I'd like to add - DID they even need a complete teardown/rebuild, let alone to this extent? The "rebuild" argument seems more like rationalization to me.
Devil's advocate time - For years, the general criticism of Jerry on this board has been that he pursues a high volume training method that results in athletes getting injured. Is it possible that he intends to redshirt all incoming freshman and to use that first year to get those athlete's strong enough to thrive in the Schumacher system?
Does anyone here really expect him to throw 18-year-old kids into the fire right away? Did you think that he was going to water down a method that has produced AR holders and runners that could hold their own against the world's best? I sense that many of you would rather he destroy Simeon Birnbaum or Connor Burns just so you could scream, "I told you so!" on this message board.
Great runners like Shalane are too self absorbed to be great coaches.
You know, you got me thinking now: when I think of the people I consider to be "great coaches," they were kind of mid-packers themselves! Lol. Like, they were people who wanted to be great, but were kind of average runners, tbh. Maybe star runners lack the passion to coach? Idk.
there's probs some exceptions though. Don't most star runners go onto other careers, or just retire? What is Ryan Hall doing, lol.
I guess Pascal Dobert was a great runner, and he coached (what's his name) to Olympic bronze.

Tbf when the only guy Oregon sends to NCAAs is an 800 runner it makes it even worse
Lol.
When you’re a coach it should be about the athletes, not about you. Shalane couldn’t handle not being the center of attention. So, she had to go run 7 marathons in 7 weeks to make it about her again.

1.) So the expectation is that the kids spend the first 2 of their maybe 4 year career rarely competing? If I were an AD, I would not like this. 2.) This is not the pros and in college, results matter and so far Jerry's results are BAD. A high profile, high resourced program Oregon should never be finishing 7th at a regional, let alone during a down year in the region. Redshirt your top guys and Oregon's 4-10 guys should be at least sniffing the national meet, considering the level of talent the program is attracting.

The Schumacher System should change to reflect college athletics. The college athletes shouldn't have to change to fit into his system.
He is sacrificing 2-3 entire years of results just so he could triple a high school sub 4 milers mileage?
With the talent oregon has, you could literally have those guys run 80 mpw and be in the hunt to win nationals. One long run, one fartlek/long-interval workout, a tempo run, some strides and the rest easy mileage and produce a team that would be fighting for the win. Why is Jerry making this so hard? And why is this tolerated? What's the point of going to oregon and not racing now in favor of some undefined future perfect state of fitness and results?

Coaches try to distinguish themselves, acting as though they’ve reinvented the wheel by “prescribing” all kinds of complicated workouts.
Anybody can tell someone to go run for an hour at an easy pace or to do 6x800 at 5K with 90 sec rest.
