You just have to look at past results to see how good this strategy is for the win. Anyone who goes out hard is always eaten up by the second half of the course.
The elephant in the room that NOBODY is talking about is that a marathon is not two halves, not even two halves 2 min slower than one. Mo's speed will only get him a 2:04/2:05 if he can solve the fuel problem. Exhibit A: Ritz.
Since Mo's never raced that far, we don't know how he'll respond. He might be a Bekele, but he might just as easily be a Ritz. He's still bloody faster than most people on this planet, but the recent spate of exceptional marathoners seems to have made everyone forget how hard it is to be great at it.
