He will (and should) abandon the 1500 next year. Stay fresh for the 5000 trials and make the team. He may have had a better shot tonight had he not run Thursday. Not making excuses. Just thinking the 1500 might have sapped him a bit.
He should leave. Seriously. It seems like Jerry just completed ignored him. It was not individualized training, he is a different type of runner than Grant and others.
The whole group underachieved. Jerry's new job means he is neglecting the pro athletes.
Cooper don't waste any more of your prime years under a coach that doesn't understand you or listen to you.

This is exactly how it sounded to me too. I really think jerry needs to have these guys race more or something, just don’t seem sharp in non time trial scenarios. I don’t want Cooper wasting his time there
If you replace Jerry with Ben Thomas then BTC and Oregon have much more successful seasons this year. Ben Thomas is quietly turning middle of the pack NCAA guys into top US men first at VT, then Oregon, then with this new OTC. Shame Nike doesn’t give him a chance. We’ve already seen what he can do with some of the most talented (Teare and Hocker). Most underrated coach in the game and the best at preparing RACERS instead of time trialers
What? He was on track last yr. Should have stayed with Ben.
Everyone was saying the exact opposite thing last summer when both teare and hocker were injured under Thomas. Ultimately both need new training groups elsewhere. Constantly being around the new Gen TF stuff is bad for their personal growth and takes away from the seriousness of pro training. Hocker is basically still living a college lifestyle with NGTF but gets paid instead of going to class. He's never going to reach his ceiling in this set up. I think BTC at least makes Teare realize that he is a pro and takes it seriously.

I don’t think Teare should be with Ben Thomas or Jerry. He’s very much best at the 3,000 indoors, which puts him as a similar profile to Jakob and Katir (obviously not as good). Jakob and Katir run miles, but they have a huge focus on smooth speed. This long aerobic BS from Jerry is killing Teare’s speed.
I think he needs to go to Flagstaff with Abdi, Grivalja, and have Mike Smith coach him and be all-in on the double threshold.
Is Cooper still involved with new gen? I feel like I never see anything from him in their stuff anymore. I think best case scenario is he goes back to OTC with Hocker and they get a few more really solid teammates. Although some of those otc guys weren’t bad this year
Yeah, that was a brutally honest interview. Tough to watch. He owned up to his poor racing tactics, but it was clear he felt unprepared. Note to Jerry: When your athlete says he didn’t feel sharp, didn’t have enough racing experience this year, didn’t get to do the 1500-specific training he wanted, and lacked confidence going into championship races, you have failed as a coach.
Tough weekend for the guy. Think he should’ve stayed with Ben Thomas’s crew
I don’t know but the fit with Jerry seems forced at best from the start. Cooper likes to race, Jerry abhors it. Cooper likes to run the 1500, Jerry sees him as a 5,000 guy. Cooper also wants to travel to a high-level 1500 out somewhere, and only in recent years (with Grant/Mo forcing the issue) have BTC athletes raced in Europe Pre-Worlds, let alone USA. Philosophically, they should get on the same page.
