seriously - it seems more likely to me that simpson's arm throw was just her trying to get her balance back after getting hit from behind
Look at the video. Simpson was almost in lane two. Rowbury did not run up on her, which is shown clearly in the video.
This is a completely fake controversy. There wasn't anything DQable from anyone. Haven't any of you ever seen a track race before?
Especially with the altered subject line I hope this isn't just LR trying to generate clicks and page views because it's a pretty shabby way of doing it.

Watch this video, both from the front and the side. From the front is shown that Simpson puts her arm out as soon as she sees Rowbury is beside her, and keeps her arm there for three strides. From the side is shown that Rowbury is flying past Simpson, but her forward motion is stopped immediately when she is impeded by Simpson. You can see the three jolts to Rowbury as Simpson impedes her with her arm. The third one caused Rowbury to fall down.

What I saw from this video is Simpson actually moves wide a little in the step before the arm contact. The arm contact, even it if was intentional, is ridiculously minor. You guys have run a 1500m before, right? You get you shins spiked all the time and have a bunch of other incidental contact in almost every race? Or do I just run in the most violent races ever? I can't really understand why either of them fell down, unless they were intentionally diving. There's definitely no "foul" in this race. Get fugging real. The only way there could be less contact is if they ran individual time trials and compared times at the end.

I agree. It's a possibility, but it wasn't clear from the video if a slight arm contact was actually the first indicator to Simpson that someone was on her inside (before further contact).
It does seem that Simpson didn't really know Rowbury was there until the arm touch revealed how close she was...It seems that Rowbury just never got her balance back from leaning hard at the line. It took a few steps for it to manifest, but she was probably going to face plant eventually...
I also have a hard time believing that one flailing arm brush could have had any significant impact on a hard charging Rowbury...
agree. not enough contact that would could either runner to go down and no way any DQ. both wee diving for the line.
but isn't the winner decided by the torso? The way Simpson goes down looks like her torso clearly doesn't reach the line first

Race official here. We got the results from the photo finish, but if you think that Jenny's torso clearly doesn't reach the line first, this picture must be wrong. Thanks for the correction, we'll get Shannon on the phone and tell her that she won.
obviously rowbury wouldn't get the DL title if she won either way. BUT would Jenny still get the DL title if she was second and Rowbury first?
The relevant part of the torso is defined by the IAAF as: "the outer end / articulation of the collarbone (clavicle)"
jeez, this makes me not like Rowbury. I'm sorry this isn't her first VERY close second this season (USAs 5k), but Jenny was the rightful winner. She didn't touch Shannon. Jenny's elbow touched Shannon's arm as a result of her(Jenny's) arm swing. In which case, it's Shannons fault for trying to pass/win on the inside while Jenny was already in lane 1.

Anyone have a good replay of the finish? Would love to see what happened.

@runsta123 I know...
It seems like Shannon and Jenny are not on great terms. They also didn't shake hands after the race. Shannon has a right to be pissed. Watching that last 100m, there is no question who should have won that race. I'm not saying Jenny is a cheater but that was a little bit too much contact on her part. This is not a contact sport.

You are not a race official, just like the people that run this site are not coaches. This is the REAL race photo posted by Shannon's herself:
https://twitter.com/ShannonRowbury/status/505066588739878914/photo/1Unlike the losers posting here, there is nothing negative from Shannon about the race. Jenny won the race--not by much, but she won the race. I like both Jenny and Shannon and I'm happy Jenny got the title. I actually though Hassan was going to win.
this all goes back to 1 thing: shannon shouldn't have tried to pass on the inside without any problems. And, really, if she's going to get pissed about it- at least can she be mindful of what she did the Huddle at USAs- drift all over the place to stop Huddle from passing her...
Before the finish Simpson was weaving in and out of lane 1 and 2, going out of the inside line to impede the runner outside of her. I cringed while watching it, I wish they didn't try to pull that stuff.
Simpson is a good runner and fun to watch but I am no longer a fan. She is a flopper.

It's called racing. No one was "impeded". Get your eyes checked.

^^^Let us go with this thought for a moment...
1. Jenny is running in lane one.
2. Jenny feels contact on left arm, from someone else running in lane one, coming up from behind.
3. Jenny should be polite and move over, in order to prevent further contact.

There is definitely bad blood between these two. Probably even worse now. It's ok though, Jenny loves all the attention

And Shannon wants some of it?
/thread (already. hee hee)
Seriously, when they wake up tomorrow, I hope neither has any lingering issues from their falls (although evidently Simpson had to have some stitches.)

Incidental contact. Watch the clean stride at 1:34 with no contact, JS has a wide arm swing). A smart runner would verge slightly in if they sensed someone trying to sneak on the inside of HER lane. Jenny had a right to the lane.
On the other side Shannon had a right to fight for the finish (her hooking JS hand and turning it toward JS) and was subtle and if she had won I would have considered that contact incidental and would have thought JS should have closed down lane one better.
Well within fair racing from both women. What a great rivalry. I liked the Merrit/Wariner thing and like this too.
I thought Shannon had won. High risk to wait for the inside lane. Low percent that it will stay open.
BTW, I think Jenny was losing her stride on her own, like Prefontaine was losing his at Munich.

I definitely am a race official. Please look at my name. I wouldn't be able to put that name if I wasn't a race official.
