What's the worst, (possibly hilariously bad) running advice you've heard?

Stop running, it's bad for your knees.
I'm 61. No knee problems.
I've heard similar stuff, I should quit running cause it's bad for my hips. I think the funniest was a co-worker telling me running 5ks and 10ks all out was bad for my heart. Yet this guy was overweight with bad cholesterol, I think he was just trying to justify being sedentary
"The more pasta you eat, the faster you will run!" Yeah, maybe to the nearest toilet. Or as Jeff Galloway calls it "carbo UNloading".
To never take a day off.
You got this!
If Steve-o ran PRs while drinking and partying too much then anyone can do it.
Not stupid, more subtilty humorous.
Track Coach told me "keep taking a left and get back as fast as you can"!
my hs coach always said that if you take a break longer than 2 minutes on a run, anything you do after doesn’t have any benefit.
he was actually a very successful coach and i get the point of why he said that (so we wouldnt just walk/stop on runs) but he would literally say if you ran 12 miles but stopped at halfway, you only got 6 miles of “gain”, period, and we all took that to heart.
Take longer strides.
The stupid people who keep repeating the nonsense that magnesium supplements prevent cramps.Really show me one scientific or medical paper to backup your claim,
pasta makes you fasta
180 is the correct step rate ... (J. Daniels)
You gotta run more miles!
Yeah, but he never said that.
Magnesium is essential for muscle contraction and relaxation, just like every electrolyte. No magnesium = more likely to cramp.
Not advice per se, but a friend once tried to tell me that being taller is better for running.
Obviously if your only 4 feet tall your going to struggle, but being 6 foot 4 wouldn’t be good either.
"Your heart has a set amount of beats it can do in a lifetime, when you use them up you're finished"
I ran for the iconic Mr. Joe Newton at York H.S. in Illinois back in the 80s and there a few things which he or the second coach in T&F used to yell at us which were probably nonsense but helped us stay healthy and motivated, despite contradictory behaviour.
1. Drinking carbonated drinks is bad for your lungs, the bubbles mess your capacity to breathe. I think this was the second track coach, Mr. Redell. I truly believed this for years and avoid soda. Despite that, Mr. Newton used to use Fantas to reward XC runners for various things.
2. When you think you're dying in the last 300m, "you've still got 33% left so KICK IT IN!" I'll never forget seeing a guy completely pass out in the chute for pushing too hard, probably thinking "I still have 33%!" I've no idea what the percentage of energy you still have left is, but everything in H.S. seemed harder, more dramatically painful.
3. "Every day you eat, you should run". During the season and often even in the off-season, we never took a day off. I can see the positive sides of running everyday, but I definitely became a better runner when I started running 6 days a week.
"You should do all your runs at marathon pace."
No speed, no easy running; just marathon pace.
