The ncaa just caught on with Tuohy. We all knew it was going to happen. Worst thing for her is to stay in NCAA and keep losing to collegians. She needs to go pro and enjoy being the underdog for awhile.
She’s the underdog in the ncaas, Maia ramsden smoked her, Parker smoked her, she isn’t some unstoppable force. Putting her against pros would be a blood bath
I’m personally excited by this.
Tuohy came onto the scene (both in hs and college) as this seemingly unstoppable force. The fact that others are catching up to her exploits speaks volumes about women’s distance running in this country. Not giving her ALL the credit, but it has definitely gone up a few notches compared to even just 5 years ago.
This new generation of American women is kind of amazing
Things can change quickly... Tuohy beat her at regionals in the spring at 5K, and she had a 1500 in her legs already... Valby has definitely looked better since then... But track 3k? 5k? Are different beasts... Valby looked kind of slow off the line at Cross country Nationals... Can she win a college 3K? Mile?
Valby's lifetime 5000 pr is 15:20. Predicting that she will take 30 seconds off of it seems unlikely.
As to Tuohy, we will see. But for Tuohy overhauling her Valby would have won in 2022 by 7 seconds over a healthy Chmiel. Here she won by 10. People forget how dominant Tuohy's 2022 performance was. She spotted Valby 15 seconds bc she had to worry about team considerations then decisively ran her down over the final 1.5k. I do not buy that Valby had some great running epiphany after Tuohy defeated her again and again. She was super trained last year and was again this year. I think Valby is better this year, but not significantky so. I think Tuohy's whole season was geared to peak at Nationals and to try and repeat last years performance, but we never got to see the end result.

We might see Tuohy at BU racing Valby even if she turns pro. But I don't think it will count towards any record lists if she is running unattached, could be wrong though.
I think that if Tuohy wasn't ill we would have at least seen a much more interesting race individually, instead if the entire field just ceding the race.
astro you are ubiquitous as well as annoying, they are both outstanding runners. This season goes to Valby. Her 15:20 was a solo effort in 88 degree heat and high humidity. That was easily a sub 15:20 in better conditions, and in a good field with pacers low 15. Moreover, most of the top women in the USA 5000 are now running more than 30 seconds faster than in college.
It's embarrassing seeing young adults cry like this. These are typically young adults who come from upper class families and very supportive family structures who really haven't known a hard day in their entire lives and for some reason think that their distance running is the center of the world.
How about at the finish line you thank your coaching staff and the university for funding your entire education on the basis of you being a very fast runner?

This is the post. Focusing on Tuohy takes away from the incredible accomplishments of all those that beat her. As far as I can understand, this was a most difficult XC course for NCAA Championships and 3(!) individuals broke the previous NCAA 6k Women's record. I hate the focus on Tuohy. I don't know that she could beat the other women who bested her at the Championships. They ALL (Tuohy included) crushed it. Looking at the woman who placed second and her times this season (comparative to Tuohy's career), she may be the face of NCAA for the next 4 years!
People focus on Tuohy because she has earned the attention over the last seven years and was the defending XC champion.
The Nationals course last year was more difficult. Tuohy ran 19:08 on this year's Nationals course at the ACC championship in 2022 in a final K kick race without going too deep into the well. The fact that three runners broke the previous NCAA record in the same race tells the story. We certainly know that she can beat Olemomoi and Markevich because she has done it repeatedly. She beat Markevich by 30+and 16 seconds this very XC season. Never raced Lemggole before, but Lemgdole was less than five seconds in front of Markevich and had lost to Olemomoi earlier in the season. For me the question mark was whether she could overhaul Valby a second time and make up the gap from earlier in the season, but not in the cards.
Anyway the race is in the books.

Tuohy held the previous course record here in 19:08. She set it last year at ACCs. This year she struggled at 19:23.
Unless she has regressed since last year, this was just a really bad day for her individually. It doesn't take anything away from others to acknowledge that.
Good point. She was 15 seconds off the time and the ACC race would have been a controlled effort saving it for nationals. Just a bad luck. That said, Markevich in particular has been excellent for a while.

Markezich and Maatoug both improved a lot since last season, and ran very well.
