So freaking well done and inspiring. Kipchoge is a hero.
So, the question now is when does this happen again? What about Bekele's attempt? Isn't adidas doing something with Kimetto?? This chase could be straight out of the sub 4 Bannister era.

Please stop.
Look at me guys I'm realizing now that I really don't have that much against this event, but I was right so I get to downplay an absolutely unbelievable effort that just about no one saw coming!
Decided not to read this comment after seeing the words "I" and "me" about fifty times.
Look, sub-2 or not, this is a big thing. Stop being a complete, self-centered douche about it.
i would just like to say that i quite possible had the greatest prediction. Someone owes me a beer
Seriously so disappointed in rojo
You have the ability to be a huge ambassador for the sport yet you act like runnings version of the angry, screaming middle school kid playing online games.
How can anyone think this was not fun to see? We all get it, it was a marketing ploy by Nike and the "science" was a bit cheesy. Who tf cares!!!? Everyone's constantly complaining about how boring running is to watch and how it will never be popular. Yet when something interesting finally happens we have the largest online running community trashing it. Rojo you've become a joke and I've been on your side a very long time

That pretty much sums it up. I watched start to finish. Kipchoge is/was unreal. Just the picture of perfect form, relaxation, and controlled intensity. Watching the pacers, then him, you could see the difference.
Yes, it was a controlled experiment, not a marathon per se. But it takes a brave man to participate in this particular controlled experiment. I kept assuming he'd kept a little something in the tank for the final half mile. Did he, in fact, gain some seconds in that last half mile?
Big day at Monza.
With all the helpful factors in this race, I wonder if it isn't having pacers that's the most important- for the psychological support. Whatever runner that breaks, or gets damn close to 2:00 is probably going to be all alone.

Couldn't agree more. I can't f*cking believe how close Kipchoge came to the barrier. I got chills as I was watching this, esp from like 30-35k where he looked so comfortable and was still on pace. Amazing, amazing run. I'm really looking forward to people digging in to how much was the absurdly good pacing vs the shoes, etc etc.

Tongue in cheek as this seems to be, humor won't solve your problem, narcissist. You have a job, and you didn't do it.
Thank god your butler caught it before, like, 10,000 people on the internet saw it. Not. You took what could have been a celebration of something cool, regardless of NIKE and the conditions (I don't like either), and turned it into something about you.
F*ckoff, that's just not human.
Were you also this butt hurt when people blasted Lance Armstrong? Don't you feel like a cool?

FCUK YOU ROJO. YOU ARE A DIRTBAG TO INJECT YOU INTO THIS MOMENT.
Dude, I agree it was a bad tweet. Weldon deleted it. But hell my professional credibility was 25 seconds from being smashed. I 'd have to shut down the job and get a job. Who is going to hire a 43-year old pseudo journalist who can't spell even if went to Princeton? I'd be lucky to work at McDs and aren't robots taking over there?
If you had even a hint of honour, you'd at least man up and apologise for an ill-timed truly distasteful remark. Say, it was a failed attempt at being funny or whatever.
Everyone discussing rojo's tweets STFU already. No one cares.

So why is everyone so upset? I want to see races.
You assume we won't see any races because we are seeing all out efforts to run fast? There is room in the sport for both. And both are compelling. You seemed to disrespect this particularly attempt to simply run fast. There is history for these attempts....
When Bannister went sub-4, was it a race or a planned event to break 4? Was it any less compelling?

I love Kipchoge but let me gloat by saying, "I told you so."
NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
Gotta give props to Nike. They made it sound like this was some brilliant hting by them when in reality two guys didn't even make is 13.1 at sub 60. All the credit goes to Eliud.

Honestly, f*ck you, Rojo.[/quote]
This is why you guys aren't a class act like Kipchoge. And why I won't be coming back to letsrun. This place is a cesspool of negativity.

Weldon agrees. He deleted the tweet.
KIPCHOGE WAS UNREAL. He made it way farther than I thought. So let's call it a draw. I was right that no one would break it. Nike can have some kudos for putting it on.
I still wish we knew more about the shoes.
You can't call it a draw. Your preview and your guesses were more wrong than right. It's not that they got closer than you or your experts thought. They got closer than I thought they would. The issue is the tone and arrogance of all of your previews, the filling of previews with backhanded compliments, the incessant need to include innuendo of something sinister, the post-race reaction that first wants to gloat about being "right" than acknowledging the brilliance of an effort better than most anticipated, the need to bash and post a whole "holier than thou" official statement knocking the event etc. etc.
You're always talking about track needing to find ways to evolve and find new fans. I saw a bunch of people on Twitter and elsewhere following this that I'm pretty sure aren't die hard running fans. That's great. The performance was great, but your reaction is to have official statements knocking it, issue backhanded compliments, and gloat when it "fails" by saying neener, neener, neener, I told you so.
Why are you whining snowflakes upset with Rojo? Rojo is what he is...you people need to grow a pair and don't let Rojo upset you so much.
Not only did he not break 2 but even with the most ideal conditions and aids possible and available he could not do it. And... he is the greatest living marathoner and so the best candidate to have done it.
Hopefully he hasn't jeopardized his future with this effort.

yyy wrote:So how much does the slipstream save them????
Serious question.
Great question. According to runners world it is about 4 seconds per mile at their pace... So roughly 1:44. The full slipstream and controlled pace had to be worth 2-2:30 at a minimum. EK is a badass, but this makes it a little less of a shoe breakthrough. Sorry scientists.
http://www.runnersworld.com/sweat-science/does-drafting-help-in-running
Let me get this right:
They had pacers for an extra 12K so they got more of an advantage than the difference between no pacers and having pacers?
Okay, time for adidas to play hardball and have their athletes break 2.
Maybe this has been discussed in this thread, but really, what was the huge difference between this and Bannister's sub4? bannister waited for the weather, and got real pacing/drafting for 1300m. How many of us dis that May 6th 1954 effort?
Feck, I'm still in shock after this.
Rojo still thinking anyone here cares about any of his predictions.
Rojo, you and your predictions aren't relevant to this. Almost nobody thought we were going to see a sub 2 marathon today. Kipchoge's run was incredible, but instead of focusing on that all you seem to care about is how his achievement reflects on you.
I hope somebody less emotionally invested does the write-up.
