Lol. Maybe it is more than them being big like your daily girls. Maybe it has something to do with her being a world-class athlete in a sport that requires explosiveness and quickness....and having big, muscular-looking legs. Maybe something like that.

On another note, do you guys think that the leg press is a useful machine for a distance runner to use?

You guys must think Ronnie Coleman is the strongest man in the world.

Rupp would lift much more.

I think Galen's height and lankiness might be a disadvantage (same reason guys with long arms aren't usually the best at pull ups or bench press).

Serena wins.

Plus, she us more competitive and a champion. Frankly, she would probably crush most of us.

I can't believe that a female playing a *skill* sport is stronger than a male that has to have strong legs for his job and "skill" pretty much doesn't exist in his sport. It is almost all physical in Rupp's events.

Oh, I think Serena is stronger than Rupp in a 1 rep max leg press or squat. I just disagree with the idea that men only have a strength edge in the upper body.

My guess for a below parallel squat:

Serena Williams: 245 at bodyweight 155

Galen Rupp: 215 at bodyweight 135

He's probably very close to correct. Videos show Rupp doing some reps at 135 at the most. Sure, maybe he can hit 215, but not much more. Salazar is not trying to turn him into a powerlifter. Even Warniner squatted some pretty pedestrian weights.

You guys who think that sprint speed AUTOMATICALLY equals great squat are knuckleheads. Sure, it shows potential in that area, but doesn't immediately translate. Even Carl Lewis couldn't do shit in the weight room until he finally really got into it (late in his career). At first, he couldn't do shit.

Serena would destroy him. I don't know what kind of weights she does, but give them both a month to max out, and serena would lift whatever Rupp can do, and that put Rupp on her back and do that too.

Trex has already covered this, but I've seen the videos of Rupp lifting. He uses pretty light weights.

Um, distance runners can sprint. I would bet it all that an elite MALE distance runner could leg press more (either one rep or 10) than an out of shape, fat, 5'9" female tennis player.

Serena Williams plays an overwhelmingly SKILL sport. Mardy Fish was 30 pounds overweight and he was still a top 50 guy. When he dropped the spare tire he broke into the top 10. However, he was still one of the very elite tennis players in the world while being way out of shape.

Andre Agassi only could bench press 135 pounds when he was out of shape and ranked about 100th in the world. Tennis is more SKILL than physical conditioning.

You don't understand how the rankings work. They're based on a cumulative amount of points over your career; so if Djokovic got fat overnight and lost every match for the rest of 2013, he'd probably still be in the top 20. The fact that Mardy Fish and Andre Agassi didn't slip too far in the rankings while being somewhat out-of-shape doesn't mean that you can be out-of-shape and still succeed. That's especially true in the modern era, where slow courts and poly strings mean that baseline rallies are the name of the game.

Also, you can still be in-shape and have a little fat on you. Roger Federer doesn't even look like he works out, but he's incredibly fit and you never see him panting after points, even if he's sprinted from one doubles' line to the other 10 times in a row. Djokovic and the other Serb, the lady Jankovic, are probably both on EPO or some other drug. Same with the Spaniard, Nadal, who many speculate was on a silent band during his supposed months off for an "injury."

Also, if you think Agassi didn't keep up with fitness, you obviously haven't read his autobiography. Bjorn Borg, Ivan Llendl and Agassi were 3 players who were obsessively fit and brought the fitness culture to tennis.

so much wrong with your "analysis".

1) as I already pointed out, sprint speed doesn't = squat ability. It definitely shows potential for squat ability (fast twitch), but doesn't automatically translate at all (see what Wariner used to squat. Not much)

2) Rupp has good speed for a DISTANCE RUNNER. In the big scheme of things, he isn't that fast. When I was absurdly skinny 10th grader in HS I could almost split 50.x on the relay, and I had quads the size of most people's forearms. I guarantee you that even after a month of squat training back then, I wouldn't have been doing much at all. But my speed wouldn't have far off of Rupp's. Furthermore, Rupp is trained 99% to be a SLOW-TWITCH athlete. This doesn't translate to a big squat in any way shape or form. You really think Absel Kiprop, who is much faster than Rupp, could squat a lot?? I bet he has trouble with the 135.

3) if you want to talk about which takes more power, and which is more likely to translate to a good squat, being able to, in the blink of an eye, explode 4 steps to your right and then immediately jump high in the air to complete a smash at the net vs running a decent 100m with a running start, guess what, the former is a much more explosive/power movement than the latter.

4) yes, the strongest male LIFTERS are a lot stronger than the strongest female LIFTERS. But we are comparing a distance running man vs a tennis playing woman who happens to be HUGE. Different comparison entirely. There are so many power trained women (lifters, throwers, heptathletes, etc) who aren't even that big that could crush 99.9% of male distance runners in lifting, it is not even funny.

I dont get it. You agree with me that Rupp could 1RM more than 215 and then tell me never to post again. 1 rep max...ONE REP MAX 215...Every one but the first years on my team can do this and they are not explosive or strong in the least. We test 2 times a year and I don't think I've ever had anyone close to 215 as a 1RM. After they warm up they start at 225. If Rupp has any training at all he's over 215 which is what I said (which you agreed with actually) Are you just angry in general?
