That's what she said in an essay she wrote about her days as a Penn Relays star for Tennessee.

Ol’ Phoebe is delusional.
I was at this meet . ⬇ I always admired Phoebe .

If that's the Super Bowl, could you have imagined this!?
In the 1988 Olympics Vicki Huber started to get overwhelmed with pressure. Her coach Marty Stern said something like don't worry it could be worse, it could be The Penn Relays.
There was a time when the atmosphere at Penn was that intense.
I mean she's not wrong. How many times do college athletes run in front of full football stadiums?
.....and Arkansas stopped coming in order to have their own relay meet in front of about 10 family members.
Baseless claim unless she has been to the super bowl too.
Penn Relays is not that same meet it once was. Not as exciting as it used to be
Well, maybe more like the Weiser Lock Copper Bowl.
Unfortunately true but It was special. I've been to many world championship meets and although some of the moments were special the meets as a whole were not as exciting as Penn for me. Watching heats of the 200 and 400 got boring but those Saturday morning 4x400 relays never did to me. And watching LSU, Tennessee, Odessa, Auburn, Texas, Arkansas in the sprints and Arkansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgetown, Villanova in the distances were always spectacular.
She's right. So how come Philly has never put in a bid for the Olympic Trials ? I've been to Eugene for the 2012 trials and found it to be creepily Niketown. Didn't come close to the excitement of The Penn Relays.
Well, vcken, the Olympics aren't just track and field, for starters.
Did Tennessee even send a team this year? I can’t find them in results...
This is one of many reasons why track and field is a third tier sport in the US. Penn Relays was THE premier amateur track and field venue, in terms of excitement, tradition and number of spectators. And for I’m sure are petty and parochial reasons, it’s become a shadow of itself, in terms of prestige and top flight NCAA representation.
