If you use the expression 'BQ,' you're a hobby jogger. Runners sign up for Boston when they want to run it.

I once ran 2:31 on 50 mpw and my friend ran 2:34 on 90 mpw. It was probably all he could get out of himself in training. AND, he cared a lot more about running than me as I didn't have a lot of time to dedicate and I got to 2:31 on a lot of natural talent. I could probably run 2:25-27 if I liked marathon training and wanted to give it a go. So, in terms of effort, I gave less.
90 mpw was "all her could get out of himself"? Unless you are seriously disabled, you should be able to run at least 100 mpw. He ran only 90 mpw because he lacked motivation and commitment. Just ask HRE.

^^This.
2:20 and 2:45.
Unless it's your fucking career you're a hobby jogger by definition, and THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. Running teaches you to push yourself, it gives purpose and balance to your life, it is enjoyable, it connects you with people, it makes you spend time outside getting fresh air. Besides, finishing time in a race is not always a reflection of your dedication-- there are more factors affecting performance than just male and female, which is why I can never run a 2:20 marathon no matter what I do.
Don't be afraid to be a hobby jogger. Just enjoy your life

The cut off is qualifying.
The cut off is being in contention for a medal at the Olympics. If not, it's just a hobby.
To me it isn't the time. I ran ,100 mi weeks for about 20 yrs, ran w a club at hundreds of road races, relays, and 12 marathons, 2 Fifteies, atwenty-four hour relay on a track and a relay from California to Eugene Oregon . I never bettered 2: 47 in a marathon or 10:25 in a track two mile or 10 1/2 miles in an hour run. Screw anybody who calls me a hobby-jogger.

it's a hobby unless you are a pro wrote:
For it to be other than a hobby you need to be a pro. Sub-2:20 for men might get you to a point where you can get free shoes but no real sponsorship (a semi-pro but still a hobby). Can a 2:14 guy make a living with no other job? Maybe. Sub-2:10 for sure can be a pro.
I don't think people are offended by the hobby part as much as the jogging part. It may be a hobby, but I am not jogging. This is let's run, right?
Why do you need to feel superior to a 4 hr marathoner? You have more in common with the 4 hr guy than you have with Kipchoge.
I am going to weigh in... My way! So my first ever marathon was in 6:27:16 ( after two aid station stops)...i had walked the whole thing. One year later, I knocked 47 minutes off of my time ....5:40.....again walking... In 2009, i was motivated and decided to train to run/walk it TIme: 4:38:06 I did not do as well in 2010 and pulled out at mile 21 in 2011 I did not re-visit full marathon distance again until 2017 because i wanted to train for a Boston Qualifying time My first 15 miles last year were in 2:01:16 My first 20(after having to walk some) were in 2:57:32 My final time was 4:09:58 My point is that many share this kind of story and even quicker. No, i did not get a BQ, but my training was much more serious than a hobby. So...the subtext is this....someone suggested that if you have to pay for a marathon, you are a hobby jogger. Therefore, either i am and others are not hobby joggers or practically all of us are. The room egos can decide Mike

According to an article I read, you are jogging when you are running 6 mph or slower (10:00 pace) so therefore the cutoff between hobby runner and hobby jogger is 4:22:11.

Sub 3 lol. Anything above 2:20 is hobby jogger. Basically, if you are not national or nearing national level, you are a hobby jogger.
To be fair the only difference between a 2:20 and a 3hr marathoner is how fast they run. Other than being faster, the 2:20 guy is the same - no prize money unless they take the greyhound to easy races, no contract, no free shoes or free travel.... there has to be some other distinguishing feature for someone to not be a hobby jogger, and that must be some type of earning potential.
