I'm wildly out of consensus on abortion issues, but I think the whole 'they don't care about babies, they're real goal is to control women' argument is very weak.
And same with this sort of 'playing chess' argument. I think Dems are wrong to dismiss the sincere belief among anti-abortion forces that abortion is murder.
Dems should stay with the Bill Clinton line - 'safe, legal and rare' phrasing and not let the Rs paint them into a corner like this as being the party of abortion.
You can't not be the "party of abortion" to people who believe it's murder. There's not as many of those people as there are people who agree reasonable abortion laws are OK, but they're also very loud and vote and donate often.
Why not make birth control free like in Colorado? That's reduced abortions there by 10-20% depending on the age group and drastically cut down on unwanted pregnancies. And further consider the fact that Republicans don't demand any sort of child care planning bills or easy access to healthcare that poor people, who are going to be forced into having the biggest money sucker of all time when they can't afford it, are going to get crushed by.
It's all about signalling to the hardcore base for votes and money
