I think this quote from malmo sums it up (2006 poster of the year thread, 12.18.2006):
Like Andy Kaufman before him, we don't know if the430miler is a comic genius just pulling our leg, or if he's just wandering aimlessly through the barrens of cyber-space. With furtive glances over our shoulders, we nervously chuckle -- just in case.

I used to love the 430miler threads. People took him so go#$amn seriously.
A great artist can elicit a visceral response even when the audience knows that the work is fictional. That's how 430 was. We all knew he was trolling, but he managed to hit just the right notes to pull us in anyway.

Agreed. And great quote by malmo too.
Ha. I forgot that there was always the mystery of whether he WAS Barrett Dahl or whether he was someone else impersonating Barrett Dahl. God I miss quality trolling. jamin should learn some lessons.

Actually, if somebody punches you first it exactly does give you the right to beat the sh*t out of them. Whether you choose to exercise that right is up to you. If someone punches me and throws hot coffee in my face, you can bet I'm not going to walk away and call the authorities.
And if someone spits on you, that is assault, and you have a right to defend yourself. Further, Dahl walked away to get police and Mendoza followed him and further harassed him. Dahl had every right to feel threatened and defend himself. Mendoza was absolutely on the offensive here and started the whole situation.

"Dahl, 28, is a Redskins fan who has been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, and is considered a disabled dependent by the state of Oklahoma, where he lives with his parents, according to documents provided to The Durango Herald by his family"
Psych Central:
"2.They may go off on tangents during a conversation and their speech can seem incoherent. Even though in some cases this symptom might mean a possible thought disorder, it’s more likely that the incoherent speech is a result of their one-sided, egocentric conversational style, inability to provide background information, clearly distinguish changes in topic and tendency to express their inner thoughts.
3.Some experts view the long-winded and one-sided conversations as one of the most prominent differential features of the disorder. The child or adult may talk incessantly, usually about their favorite subject, often completely disregarding whether the listener is interested, engaged or trying to interject a comment, or change the subject. Despite such long-winded monologues, the individual may never come to a point or conclusion"

Well, there's a redundancy, am I right?
This was one of his classic posts, giving advice on how to train a dog. Txrunngirl's reply was funny too.

This thread brings to mind two things:
1) We can't judge this properly since we don't have all the information. That's what the courts are for.
2) For those feeling bad about ripping on him now that you know he's autistic, that's a lesson for all -- you just can't tell what a person is going through when you don't know them other than by the words they type on a message board. I know a wise older Southern lady, and when anyone is overly mean or rude, she assumes their shoes are too tight. Good way to be.

Oh god, that brings make memories.

Mendoza is the biggest piece of garbage I have ever seen. I have a daughter with autism and all of letsrun should come together in standing up for Dahl. mendoza should be in federal prison and blasted all over national news. instead Obama just protects him and keeps criminals like this on staff.
I am giving him a piece of my mind via email and all runners and parents should too
Wow I always thought the430miler was just an extremely dedicated troll. Didn't realize he was autistic. I mean it totally makes sense, but it does kind of cast him in a different light.

Just saw the photos of the damage he did to Dahl/430miler.
This is sick and very sad.

Maybe, but most were right about him living with his parents.

If what Barrett claims is true then you're right. However, I agree with flagpole. There are two sides to this story and we don't have enough information based on how it is reported to determine who is at fault here. Each has a very separate account of what happened.
