Cristian Soratos ran a 3:55.60 at the NCAA 1500, which was virtually a "jog and sprint fest" and did nothing to challenge the sitters, but went a long with it and lost because of it. I love the dude, but this really puts a damper on my respect for him.
"I hate how Distance running has become a jog and sprint fest..." .. BS!!

If they get any slower, they could lose to Jenny Simpson (3:55 vs 3:57).

So u would rather have positive splits where everyone goes into lactic acid and ends up running a slower time compared to beung smart and running negative splits? Im really getting sick of you little kiddie widdies on here that dont understand proper pacing and you think running and life is all about "goin hard" from the start . Pre was a moron and bad role model, thats why he never broke 13 for 5k. Every mid distance and distance world record has been negative splits. You have no business ever being a coach and you have no business ever being around children.

Good god you're dense.
your statement: "goes into lactic acid"
my response: hahaha. Come on man get a life.
your statement: Pre was a moron and bad role model, thats why he never broke 13 for 5k.
my response: so pre didn't break 13 because he was a moron and a bad role model? in 1975, when he died, the WR was 13:13.0. If he had broken 13 he would have absolutely smashed the world record. No one broke 13 until 1987, 12 years after Pre died. The WR didn't go below 12:55 until 1995. Read a book.
Your statement: Every mid distance and distance world record has been negative splits.
my response: I'm not going to bother looking up the splits for "every world record" but I can assure you even if they were ALL negative splits, they did not negative split by 18-19 SECONDS! Second lap of the 15 yesterday was 70, last lap was 52 or 51 for some. Come on man. GEt with the times. -

Ummm ever heard of Henry Rono? -
You do realize that these were not fast times right? And negative splits mean nothing if the times are freaking slow...slow enough in fact that a number of high schoolers have had faster 1600 and mile conversions this year and a full 20 seconds slower than slow diamond league races.

Same here.
I remember last year in the 5000m when Lalang blew the race open and more or less ran Cheserek into the ground with a fast pace in order to beat him. THAT is the proper approach.
Here, Soratos claims that he hates the "jog and sprint fest" but rather than break it up, just goes along with it and tries to use it to his advantage. Seriously, there is ONE way to ensure that a race is not a jog and sprint fest, which is for one or more people to not jog for the first half of the race. Evidently, Soratos is not one of those people. -
To be honest that's exactly what I expected the 4:30 miler to look like. The pic of him in the blue shorts.
-
I have to assume the 430miler is trolling us. No way someone actually believes that post is a legit rebuttal to this thread.
Anyway, I don't care about tactical races being slow because I do enjoy the drama of it, but Soratos must have been feeling terrible in the final. He literally made that comment less than 48 hours before he participated in this jogfest. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and not assume he made a complete 180 in his preferred racing style in that time. I would guess he didn't feel great so he didn't want to lead, and then he continued to not feel great and got left in the dust during the mad sprint. -

Young man, you are missing the point. Explaining this is a waste of time. You already have a warped philosophy and dont realize that once ANY athelete in ANY distance goes into lactic acid, their race is over. They have nothing left. Its not about playing it safe. Its about running the fastest projected time possible. There is occasionally a situation with 400 meter runners to go out fast if there is a very strong wind. Other than that, splits should always be run at an even pace, because even if you cant kick at the end, atleast you wont slow down. Slowing down during the 2nd half of the race is not what running is about, and its not what life is about. Children need to be taught pace at an early age, preferrable by doing lots of 200s in exactly 40 seconds. Make them do lots of mile repeats and make sure all their laps are exactly 80 (520). Then come race day we go 70 70 70 60. Thats a 430 mile. Thats what life is all about. Maintaining pace and/or speeding up. Not just goin hard from the start because it makes u feel like a bad-butt and you have no mental patience to run otherwise. Coaches should be your best friend, not a psychological dictator. People that are dictators, bosses, narcissists, etc....have no business coaching or teaching or being around children. 2 coach is 2 touch a life 4 ever.
2 coach is
2 touch a life
4 ever.

If by "blew the race open and more or less ran Ches into the ground" you mean out kicked him during the last 35-45 meters by .35 seconds 13:18.36 to 13:18.71. and that was after Ches had already run and won the 10,000m
Lalang had a great strategy and ran great race but no one got run into the ground. -
All you pu$$ies need to tell us about the races, specifically championships, that you won in record fashion. Thanks.

So tell us about breaking 13, 430. I'm sure we'd all love to hear about the time when you did it -
None of you are Miler's I assume... We all trust in our kick, and believe we have the best one. If you do not believe in your kick, then you are a guest in the field, where tou should be in a 5k. To sacrifice leading is a moronic move and you immediately take an enormous risk of losing.
A true miler will always sit and kick, and the drama is exciting!! I fu**ING love it... You know it's coming and you wait for the move to come. Sit back and enjoy the show, because the last 600 of a championship mile race is filled with Drama.
Love it!!!
