Austin Tamagno chooses NXN - Is he scared of Drew Hunter and Phillip Rocha???

Austin does not dodge competition. Austin looks forward to big races with the highest caliber of competition. He ran FL last year because he felt that's where the best competition would be. I believe he's taking the ACT this year the day of FL, thus the choice to race NXN.

He's going to U of O in 8-9 months. Of course he's going to NXN this year. He's on the path to becoming a professional. What would you do in this instance? Think it through.

The real issue here is that Nike should just buy the rights to footlocker and have the individual and team championship. Problem solved.

I'd do the same thing Hunter is doing... running Footlocker (and going to Oregon in the fall).

No one's touching Hunter anyway. He'll beat Rocha by 15 seconds if he wants to.

who cares about ditching roscha. hunter is gonna win FL. top guys doing NXN is what's best for the sport. end the years of split nationals.

Both Tamagno are going to be at Oregon, so plenty of opportunities to test oneself against the best.

Well, fine if he's taking the ACT - however, I really wonder - if he's already committed to Oregon, what is the point of skipping Foot Locker in order to better his ACT score? Is there something special about doing it on December 12th as opposed to, say, February 6th? If he is already committed to Oregon, why does he need to better his ACT score right NOW? Is there a deadline for a scholarship he is trying to get or what? Doesn't make complete sense to me.

Then again, he can do whatever he wants - he can make his own decisions after all.

The ACT thing is a joke. Earlier in the season he didn't run in a fast race because of it

We figured that this subject would get some social media time. So, let me set the record straight: 1. Austin has NEVER skirted competition. 2. Taking the ACT/SAT is not an excuse but a reality as he is trying to qualify for the Summit academic scholarship. He has the GPA but needs the raise his test scores. 3. Should he get the necessary score, this will help us financially over the next few years. 4. No, he is not participating in NXN because of Nike.

As his parents, we are very proud of his academic and athletic accomplishments, his maturity, and his competitiveness AND we look forward to next phase of his career at Oregon.

There will be many more opportunities to run against the best in the years to come. It certainly will be exciting !!!!

Why doesn't he just go to a school that will give him a full scholarship? This has always confused me. Mr. Tamagno may get pity from others concerning costs of college, but there's a better solution. These young men and women getting out of school with $50,000 student loans are purely paying for "experience".

No national championship opportunities are worth $50,000+. For a runner with his talent there's a good state school that has a competitive program that will pay his way.

I looked up the summit scholarship. Oregon gives 6,000 for a 26 on the ACT? Wow.

it's possible he'd get an athletic scholarship if he doesn't get the Summit, but he wants to save the team the scholarship/was strongly encouraged by coaches to try to get it

I do not coach Austin anymore; I moved in August. Matt Rainwater is the head coach at Brea Olinda. I do, however, still talk with Austin and Matt, and I know that Austin's decision to race NXN was based upon his need to take the ACT the day of FL for the reasons specified by Gerardo. Austin's grades are solid.

I chimed in because I don't like seeing kids trashed through unfounded speculation. Perhaps I should not play into the trolls, but it's beyond laughable that Austin would ever want to avoid competition. He's raced some big-time competitors over the years. Furthermore, NXN will not be a cake walk.

We appreciate the clarification, but you need to understand that LetsRun is inundated with jealous simpletons. If you take these jackasses seriously, you are falling to their sick level. The sad part of all this is that the Johnson brothers actually encourage the juvenile behavior as a way of increasing their personal monetary gains.
