They can get the medals, but everytime they look at them, they'll know they didn't obtain them through the proper channels. They will feel a twinge of guilt everytime they see that medal hanging from their fireplace mantel. One day, they'll realize the medal is meaningless without the experience behind it.
If they ran the course the day before, they didn't compete in the marathon. They completed a training run on the same route. Nothing special.
If they raised enough money they'd have an official spot.
Proper channels or not, 26.2 on the Boston marathon trail is not an easy task whatever day you run it. I'm proud of their accomplishment and so are they. It may not be special to you, but it is to them.
I realize this is a very delayed post on this thread, but it popped up when I searched "Boston Marathon finishing medals."
I have a peculiar situation:
For my father's 70th birthday, I'd like to commemorate his many Boston Marathon runs in the 80's-2003 by framing one of his finishing medallions.
The glitch is that he only saved a few of them, and when he gave those to me a couple of years ago, I lost in them course of a big move. (I also lost my own BM finishing medal as well, so serves my right for not being more careful. But, yes, I am a bad daughter, believe me, I've berated myself thoroughly).
My father isn't a very sentimental person, but he is very proud of his running accomplishments and those medals are some of the very small amount of memorabilia he saved after downsizing his possessions.
If you or anyone you know is willing to sell a finishing medal from between 1983-2003, it would mean a lot to me and make a wonderful memory for my father. I can only offer $50 for it, but be assured I won't be making money off of it.
Thank you and running!
Just wait for one.
Chicago 1996. Does this seller regret auctioning it? $5.50 seems like a waste of time.

Boston 2016. Only $67.

I sold my 2013 medal. Must've been a recent change.
