$370 For Your Boston Marathon Medal

why would people pay that much for this? I have last year's medal sitting in my room. I wonder how much it will be in say, 30 years?

For those prospective buyers, make sure it's the real deal before you buy. 3d printer + instagram pic by look at me runner = counterfeit medals. Seriously though why are people buying others' finisher medals?

I would have no problem selling any one of my four BM medals. I set my marathon PR in 1990, I would trade that medal for a new pair of Hokas.

You can't sell your 2013 medal on Ebay. It's considered profitting on human tragedy. (But really, what isn't.)

I got lucky and sold my copy of "Once A Runner" at $300. I think the same book is getting $10 now. I believe this is the future of that finisher medal.

Wow, me too. I got like $275 for that dumb book. I'd sell the medal in a heartbeat.

Didn't OAR's depreciation come about from the publisher releasing a second edition?

It's possible that the medals' value will go away after this current interest wanes but isn't it also possible that the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings will remain a collective memory of the American public for decades to come? What's more is the fact that there are only 31k of this year's medals in existence. That number can only decrease with the years.

$230 here. I couldn't have been happier to get rid of it.

I'd imagine people just want the medals so they can lie to people an say they ran it.

ya people were asking crazy prices for it before it was reprinted in like 2010 or so. Same way with jasaris, they were going for crazy prices before the matumbos and vics came out and now only a collector would buy them. I remember seeing jasaris for over 500 on ebay.

eBay also sells a 1904 BAA Boston Marathon finisher medal. Considering that the athlete who was awarded this medal is most likely dead already I consider it "ok" to auction off this collectors item.

Also, since there were only a couple of hundred participants, it seems fair that this medal is prized at a premium at $15,000.

I just don't believe that the demand for this medal will hold. 31K is a whole lot of "collector items". When the Honus Wagner (spelling probably off, and might even be the wrong guy) baseball card was issued it was just a tiny premium on a pack of smokes (I think) and most people just threw it away. This item ('14 Boston medal)is destined to be kept and will not become rare. Even the hardened runner who does not give a shit about medals will keep it and throw it in a shoe box with all their other crap. I would be surprised if there is this high a price in a month from now.

I sell mine each year along with the race shirt. Last year was the most money I received ($550). A lot of people like to frame their shirt/medal, but don't want to use their own.

Wagner's card goes for a premium because he objected to his likeness being used in conjunction with cigarettes. As a result, his card was not in later printings making it the rarest in the set.

Super long shot here but I am looking to buy a 2014 Boston Marathon finisher medal. A friend of mine and her husband tried to register for this race but could not get an official spot. So they ran it a few days before because they heard they would be strict with bandit runners after the 2013 race. They raised money for the BAA charity program to honor those who suffered in the 2013 tragedy. This was their first marathon and as you all know better than I do the amount of training that goes into it. I'm willing to pay $100 for it and am local to Boston if that helps. So look who was stupid...

They can get the medals, but everytime they look at them, they'll know they didn't obtain them through the proper channels. They will feel a twinge of guilt everytime they see that medal hanging from their fireplace mantel. One day, they'll realize the medal is meaningless without the experience behind it.

If they ran the course the day before, they didn't compete in the marathon. They completed a training run on the same route. Nothing special.

If they raised enough money they'd have an official spot.
