Just looking for some input here with anyone who has insight into post high school running.
A little back round; My son was not interested in college running after high school, mostly because he was not interested in continuing on in anything academic. He has always had a strong desire to be in the military and tried out for the marines but was not accepted, despite stellar physical fitness, because of a moderate hearing impairment in both ears. This was a major disappointment and devastated him for quite awhile after.
Getting to the point, he kept training and running more than he ever did in high school and even goes on training with his former teammate, who is a good Div 1 runner, when he comes in for breaks. His teammate has commented on how he should be running competitively based solely on his ability to push him in these runs.
My son tested himself and, although it was on a gym treadmill, completed a mile in 4:24. I realize that's nothing too stellar, but for a guy who just goes haphazardly runs on his own I think it's impressive. He never ran track in high school and was too stressed in school to really give high school running the right focus. He was only 16 something in CC at best. He did run a 4:59 mile in jr high.
Son still does not want to go to college, local juco does have a cross country team but he isn't interested. Does anyone have any ideas on options that would allow him to at least explore what he has in him without having to go to school? Has anyone had experience with this scenario? Just curious. I would hate for him to regret not going for it when he had a chance. Thanks
