I disagree with those who say he was training to be a 2:04 guy , that got him injured, who say that's bad. Consider the alternative: he trains to be the 2:07 guy he is and tries to grab 7th-10th in major marathons. Wouldn't we be more mad then? I would rather an American try to be one of the world's greatest than settle for being top white guy, even if it means getting injured.
Also, Asics doesn't need to drop him because he is still marketable as the American record holder. normal people see his commercials and buy Asics and have no clue that he hasn't finished a marathon since the 2012 trials. It's not like we switch shoe brands because a pro endorses that brand. I may be wrong, but I think the likes of Joan Benoit-Samuelson (sp?) and Salazar still have some level of Nike sponsorship (at least equipment).
That being said, I still think he should do more small build up races to whatever his next event is.
