Geoffrey Mutai successfully defended his 2011 ING New York City Marathon crown as he crushed everyone over the last 10k to win the 2013 ING New York City Marathon in 2:08:24 as Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia finished second in 2:09:16 and secured the $500,000 2012-13 World Marathon Majors crown.’
Ryan Vail was the top American finisher in 13th in 2:13:23 – just one spot behnd World and Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich.
“I thank God,” said Muta on ESPN 2 after the race. “To win the a race for the first time is easy. To defend your title is not easy. Today there was a very tough wind. It was very tough at first.”
