A few thousand euros didn't seem to be much of deterrent the first time. What makes you think it will work this time? He is advertising a website. He will probably get make more in revenue than the fines so they will not stop him.

Throw him in jail for 6 months, after beating him silly, and I bet he quits.

The point is that he detracted from Wilson Kipsang's achievement. He should be fined heavily and the authorities shut down any website he is advertising/promoting. If they know that they will lose any promotional exposure they'll think twice about advertising in that way.

Anybody here ever been involved in planning a large scale race? If you had, you would know that this was not a harmless prank, or a small inconvenience to race directors.

The Berlin elite field was, I'm sure, assembled to create optimal conditions for a fast race and world record. The effort of the race directors, athletes, and negotiating agents, was supposed to have culminated in an iconic moment. The photo and video documentation of that moment is now marred forever, and unusable for advertising (print, social media, website images, tv spots) the race in the future. Whoever champions the value of elite athletes to the event's brand on an annual basis, just had their job made that much harder.

Likewise, I'm sure the race-day event coordinator is livid. I assume the finish line had videographers and a professional set of photographers on hand to capture the setting of a new WR. Often finish lines will have fireworks or confetti at the beginning and finish of major races. Whatever funds and efforts went into coordinating that million dollar moment? Wasted.

I hope this guy gets taken for a lot more than a few thousand euros, when his punishment is eventually doled out.

The optimal outcome would have been a cop beside him as he was about to jump over flatten him, not knowing what he was up to but the conveniently located barricades indicating the area was off limits. The consensus is clearly this was a major security breach and serious offence.
