Right now, Manning is 10th in the world. I think she's the 3rd American.

to the poster who said that OSU has never been good in distance running. Check YOUR facts. In the 1970's and 80's OSU was very good and there was a solid tradition of excellence. Then in the 1990's it was hit or miss, then once we entered the 2000's it went downhill. Getting the right person to do a job is always the most important. In OSU's history they have had people who got the job done.
Ohio State Women as a distance program never had a tradition of excellence. What is your definition of excellence? Placing top 2 at all-Ohio XC? Name me all of their individual NCAA qualifiers from the 70's and 80's.
I apologize - it was Brink who also qualified, not Williams. Don't think that makes my post any less valid. And I know Williams has graduated - never claimed that she was currently on the team, just that her season at OSU was a strong one.
Also never claimed that the team's struggles over the past couple seasons have been due to lack of resources. I said in the past that was an issue, as there was no scholarship money for the distance events and the talent was not there. Ever since Neal has been at OSU, that has not been the case, as the distance recruiting has been very strong. People like Wagner, Brink, Hilton, and Thomas should be scoring points at the conference meet. Please don't think I am making excuses for Neal - I'm not. He's had some successes, but things are not looking good right now.
And you are correct - the fact that girls are seemingly constantly getting injured is not a positive trend at all.
Yes, but if you take times from 2011 and 2012, she is further down the list. The pros are not geared up for top times at this point in the season while the collegians are. Also, I cannot remember the particulars on the 12.57, can someone enlighten me (not that it is out of range of marks like 12.71 at Big Tens)?
One way or the other, Christina Manning is world class.
Btin back Ron Davis to coach distance women!!

True, but the w100h is so fiercely competitive that Manning will face a difficult OT field and would if she were Canadian as well!

This is the biggest bunch of BS I've ever read on this site (and that is saying a lot).
I found no results for Womens' Big 10 results for the 1970's but in the 1980's Ohio State had a stellar 4th plae showing in 1984 with also two 6ths and a 7th. The rest being 8-10 place finishes.
It got worse in the "hit or miss" 1990's. They finsished 9th to 11th every single year except 1993 when the were 8th. I guess that was the "hit".
Face it, there never has been a tradition, not any glory days to contrast to now.
I'm referring to Cross Country Big 10 results. Ohio State women do have a tradition of excellence and that is in the 110 hurdles, 100, 200, 4 x 200, 110 hurdles (their best area), 400 and 4 times 400.
Where have they finished under Neal at the Big 10 VChampionships?
9th in 2011
6th in 2010
8th in 2009
10th in 2008
