Smith has two straight XC national titles, so he must be doing something very right. Lowe, among others, has developed very well. Smith didn't create Fernandez's achilles problems and he didn't ask Fernandez to go vegan or vegetarian. Even GF's hs coach wasn't able to keep him healthy a lot of the time, though he certainly did a fantastic job in limiting his speedwork and mileage to what was necessary for the records. Anyway, with the 7:53 and the high NCAA XC finish this year, he's not having a bad year and the 1:52 indicates that he's probably not that far off his 3:39 shape. Let's let the season come to an end before bemoaning Smith's destruction of the golden boy.
Smith has won two straight XC titles by recruiting. Coaching has played NO part in his successes.
At least 5 of the 7 runners on their XC team wouldn't be there if he wouldn't have scored the deal of his life by getting Fernandez there. And that's guaranteed.
