I have no opinion on Dave Smith... but I have to ask... what would any other collegiate coach have done differently?
Vin has great success with his guys, but did you ever notice for as good as Vin's guys have been in college, within 2 years of being out of college they're done?
Training with Vig may have been a good choice.
I just don't see how GF's "problems" would have been different elsewhere, though.
In my opinion, he should pull a Jager. Leave school, take classes (paid for by Nike) at Portland or whatever to still get a degree, and be trained by Jerry. This seems so obvious to me, I just don't understand how he hasn't done it yet.
I don't know about you but did any of you missed the part of the article where it mentions that "Fernandez has been fighting injuries that have held him back for two years" maybe this why he is trying to get back at it.

What should have been done is his HS training should have been very closely mirrored to his college training with only slight increases in stimulus(mileage/reps/speed).
Trying to squeeze out some PRs by throwing him into high mileage high intensity training was the most idiotic thing the OSU coach could have done.
It will take years to correct his training and his body's chemistry IF he is smart enough to go back to his original training style or one very similar.
It never ceases to amaze me that folks who have essentially zero information about a specific situation seem to always know infinitely more about how it should be handled than those who are most closely involved and are living and working through said situation.
After his 3 years at OSU, it is actually pretty safe to say that everyone on this forum knows infinitely more about how it should be handled!

What is pretty safe to say is that everyone knows that GF has suffered significant setbacks. Beyond that it is pretty much just ignorant speculation.
yeah the major setback was going to OSU

Smith says German is trying to get back into shape. Huh, hasn't he been running at OSU for 3 years?? The article says he's a sophomore.
And what is this crap, "He will just sit back, get into pace, get into rhythm and then if he feels good, try to do something special."
Smith has destroyed this poor boy.
Re-read the article. Since I've been running, 1971, runners have always talked about getting into racing shape. The article does not say getting into shape, it says getting into racing shape.
How many times on these board have posters wrote it early in the season the person is not in racing shape, wait until later in the season.
So, before you post make sure you understand what you read.
German is a sophmore in eligiblity for track as he red shirted last years outdoor track season.

Right because Jager is doing so well and not injured or anything....
The only guy in the U.S. qualified to coach German Fernandez is his high school coach, Bruce Edwards.
It amazes me how many college coaches think they know a kid that has been on their team for one month or less better then their high school coach who has worked with them successfully for 4 years. How about you ask, "Can you send me his workout plan so I can transition him into our style program?"
I doubt that happened...why? Because all college coaches know more and the program they have is what is best.
Ok, I am being sarcastic here. GF has always been injury prone. That is the problem here. But still it wouldn;t hurt to ask questions for your incoming stud freshman who just ran 4 flat and 8:30.
As for Vin, he gets paid for doing well in college. U of O could give a crap if they win a USATF title next year when they did nothing for them at NCAA's. That said Vin's "history" is with Stanford where fast, smart kids go to start businesses and become doctors. So yes, a few years after college they are on to bigger and better things where they can make a lot more money and get just as much satisfaction.
His "history" at Oregon has been much better with post-collegiate runners as it is attracts a different type of top runner there.
"How about you ask, "Can you send me his workout plan so I can transition him into our style program?"
I doubt that happened" - Sheer Speculation
"But still it wouldn;t hurt to ask questions for your incoming stud freshman who just ran 4 flat and 8:30." - More speculation that this did not happen.
As I said - What is pretty safe to say is that everyone knows that GF has suffered significant setbacks. Beyond that it is pretty much just ignorant speculation.
To the guy that said that about Jager. Everyone gets injuries and it supports my original point that GF, no matter where he was, would likely be suffering from similar setbacks to what he has been experiencing the last 2 years. However, I would trust Jerry more then anyone else in this country. That's not a slight to Dave Smith, just a nod to Jerry.
To U knoe, I know plenty of coaches who look at their athlete's hs logs and have in depth conversations with their hs coaches. I would be very surprised if Smith did not do this. Why do you assume he didn't?
I heard Smith has been shooting German with a pellet gun in the ankle, everytime German's pace is off! I was told German has just been doing curls and bench and MMA training for the last TWO FREAKIN YEARS AND SMITH is for it! Now if Smith keeps shooting German with that pellet gun you got to admit Smith is ruining him! I heard from a good source German is forced to only eat popcorn all day!Where is Smith! Na don't tell me I got Smith's number he has been ruining German for 3 years. I KNOW!
don't worry, this is all part of the plan!

Translation: I, "the smith strategy", could not cut it at OK State and have never quite come to grips with the fact that I am a loser. For my miserable existence I blame Dave Smith, (Heck, it is better than blaming myself), so I come to these message boards to advertise my loserdom.
If German never races again it wasn't the worst college career, the kid has an NCAA individual championship, an all-american certificate in cross country and two team championships in XC. Also a USA Junior XC title and a solid showing at Junior World XC. Plus a 3:55, 7:48, 13:25 AJR.
Compare that to the guy whose 2 mile record he broke.
