Am I trying to increase my mileage too quickly? Should I work on speed for a while before moving up distance?
I've been building up (what feels like) slowly to get ready for a 13.1 on Nov. 28th. I'm not afraid of the distance (have run marathons and 1/2's before), but I'd like to get faster . I feel like I'm overall too tired from trying to run more and not getting in quality workouts. So far I'm mostly injury free, just a little soreness in the foot at times and a little twinge in the knee here and there. I've been working on doing most of my runs at a pretty easy pace (mostly Zone 2, some 3 on hills) and concentrating on good form.
After my 11 mile "long run" yesterday I was just feeling totally burnt and kind of frustrated. I had planned to keep adding the 10% each week (after staying at 40 this week for a bit of rest), but I'm wondering if I should drop my mileage back into the low-30's for a few weeks and try to add in some intensity instead of distance? Or do I just need to build distance more slowly and let the speed get better as my overall fitness improves?
I'm running mostly at 8:15-8:45 pace for all my runs, but have done a few 4-6 mi runs at 7:30-8:00 pace. Wondering if I should add in some more tempo runs and hills to mix things up and develop more speed/power? I'm 31, 6'4", 175lbs (was down to 168 two years ago), so I don't see any reason I shouldn't be able to get down to running 6:30's or better eventually.
My overall running goal is to get to 50 mpw and race 10K's and trail races for fun. Last 3-4 years have been inconsistent...sometimes I run a lot, sometimes I take 3-6 months off. Would like to stick with it consistently from here.
