Any word on who Franklin is bringing in?
Any word on who Franklin is bringing in?
Coach Howarth, who was with him at Butler.
Who is he going to bring in to coach?
Are they going distance only? Would Franklin go get himself a Jay Johnson type that can swarm the high school recruits?
If they go distance only, would UNM be good? How good?
I can assure you that they will not be going "Distance" only. They are interviewing very good candidates who have backgrounds in sprints/jumps/multi's. They will have a balanced attack at New Mexico.
Is Steffans returning to UNM as an assistant?
I actually know a sprinter/jumper, I took a look at the workouts that they typed out for him, looks legit, lots of weight training and anerobic stuff.
check the UNM website. They already hired the sprint coach several weeks ago. They have one position left and Joe was interviewing folks.
I heard he offered the job to some guy from Bucknell
Where on the web?
Confirmed - Mario Wilson from Bucknell was offered and accepted...
What area does Mario coach?
he coaches jumps. was there for 5 years at bucknell
More importantly which athletes are UNM bringing in for this fall..?
He is scrambling with the paperwork to bring all the British kids that he had committed to Butler.
Great coaching and development plan...but I guess no-one can recruit Americans to come to such a running backwater and anti-mecca as Albuquerque...(?)

actually, that is not the nature of joe at all. He develops very good personal relationships with his athlets and recruits. Brits search him out because he is spoken so highly of by the ones at Butler at the time.
Most of his recruits were interested in New Mexico the day it was posted that he received the position. He didnt even have to say a word to them about UNM in order for them to go, they are going because of him.
Why change something that has been working so well for him? If you have a proven strategy that has worked as well as getting you 4th in the country in cross country I dont think you would change it and none of you out there can say you would....performance matters.
I think a few of you are just mad that UNM is going to be getting a lot better in a very very short time.

Are we talking about the same coach who got an e-mail sent to his Butler address when he was first hired and cleaning things out in Indy from an interested potential runner. This same runner has left several e-mails and voice mails at the UNM for him and as of this evening had not even got a interest call??? And during the transition messages were left for him with the athletic dept secretary. I am sorry, but, I have to take a very strong issue with your statement and in my book he appears to be an asshole at this time. Maybe he will get the message and treat New Mexico potential recruits with the same respect as he does his overseas recruits. Brining in runners already fast isn't good coaching, it is good recruiting.
And I am sure every Division I football and basketball coach returns every single phone call and e-mail from athletes who want to play for them. Get with it. This is Division I athletics here and coaches are evaluated on winning and winning only. Bringing in runners who are already fast IS great coaching. The great basketball and football coaches bring in players who are already good don't they?
Not all of them do, just the good ones....
