Does this appear too intense for a high school runner, I'm making a serious attempt at breaking 16:00 and in my efforts to go about doing that I'm not sure if I went overboard with my training regimen.
Start @ 50mpw bump up 10 miles each week till @ 80-90mpw.
"Sunday Long Run" = 20% of weekly mileage
Tempo run = 10% of weekly mileage
Intervals = 5 miles (starting at 800m repeats working up to 1600m repeats)
I consider myself a middle-distance fellow, but was our XC team's #1 guy last year, so needless to say I'm also trying desperatly not to lose any of my speed. This has lead me to incorporate, after some workouts, going out to the track and doing 800m max of 200m, 300m, or 400m full recovery workout @ 800m goal pace.
My first week of summer is written up something like this.
Monday - AM: 10x800m @ 2:40 w/ 1:20 rest in-between
PM: 8x200m @ 28 w/ full rest in-between
Tuesday - AM: 8 miles @ recovery pace (w/e feels good)
10x100m strides on turf
Wednesday - AM: 6m @ recovery pace (w/e feels good)
PM: 4m @ recovery pace (w/e feels good)
10x100m strides on grass
Thursday - AM: 5m tempo run (5:20-5:50ish)
PM: 3x300m @ 42 w/ full rest in-between
Friday - AM: 8 miles @ recovery pace (w/e feels good)
10x100m strides on turf
Saturday - AM: 5m @ recovery pace (w/e feels good)
PM: 5m @ recovery pace (w/e feels good)
10x100m strides on turf
Sunday - AM: 10m @ LSD pace (6:45-7:15)
Does that sound too intense if I kept the recovery days extremely easy but pounded those workout days. I don't think at 50mpw it is too bad, but my concern is once I start hitting upper-mileage towards 80 and 90mpw.
I know the "LetsRun mentality" is that high school athletes shouldn't run this much mileage, but my coach encourages high mileage and most of the competitors in my state / county / conference are hitting the upper 80's during base season.
