yes it's true.
yes it's true.
WHERE ARE THE RESULTS???
it's clear to me that this is a total spoofer race...... people show up to that thing just to wear costumes and stop at bars along the course.
Yes, but you left out the part about her getting a 4:40 head start.

And it's clear to me that you are an idiot who goes on about something you don't know anything about. This race has the highest prize purse of any race shorter than a marathon and draws a healthy-sized elite field. Or do feel free to point us to another 12K with a massive hill where Catherine Ndereba runs 40 flat and gets beaten by 50 people.
By your rationale, the NYC Marathon is a total spoofer race because there are costumes and people who stop at bars.
Elite women get a head start equal to the difference between the course records, currently 4:40. Last year the male winner caught the female winner on the last meters, this year the men failed to catch the top two women.
anybody got results they could post?
for the great majority bay to breakers is just not even runnable for probably the first half of the race, because it is so crowded. one year it took me 18 minutes to even get to the starting line after the gun sounded. there were 80-100,000 people in the race.
80-100,000? really?

Might be a slight exaggeration, but this years had an estimated 60k so it's totally possible.
the start is one of the most incredible/chaotic things I've ever been through. amazing experience.
It has been over 100,000 on at least one occasion.
Out of the 60K, I doubt more than half actually complete the course from start to finish. And of those, maybe 5,000 actually try to run it.
Yes, for "real" runners this event is full of inconveniences, but we still show up to be part of it. A 12K race on a staggeringly beautiful course followed by a huge party with live music, beer and scantily clad chicks (who, unlike the naked ones, are hot). What more do you want?
It has never OFFICIALLY been over 100K. From my website:
http://www.fasttwitchpro.com/runsf
21 YEARS AGO IN SF RUNNING HISTORY
1986 - Grete Waitz and Ed Eyestone win Bay to Breakers, which sets a Guinness World record for being the world's largest footrace, with 78,769 registered runners. Throw in bandits and the number is estimated to be 110,000 runners! Holy sourdough chowder bowls!!
I read somewhere (Chronicle?) that there were only 30-something thousand registered runners, and elsewhhere 50K. I wouldnt pay $45 to run this race.....I volunteered as part of the human wall again this year--free race entry. Short of being an elite or sub-elite with preferential placement at the start, being part of the human wall is the best way to start the race--once you get over having to be there at 6AM, though.
John Korir 34:44
Julius Kibet 35:03
Ridouane Harroufi 35:08
Nicholas Kamakya 35:10

Emily Chebet 39:10
Catherine Ndereba 40:00
Dire Tune 40:04
Sylvia Skvortsova 40:21
i think that i 'ran' it in 1986, the biggest year ever, and 1987. a lot more fun when you don't try to compete, because it's pointless anyway, unless you're starting with the first 100.
the race results show that only about 23,000+ official runners finished.
That's because they turn off the timing after a certain amount of time. In fact, they cut off the last 3/4 mile or so of the course and direct people to the post-race party.
In years past the number of results has always been a fraction of the number of registrants, but with chip timing this year I think they captured more.
The first year I ran it (1989?), the winners crossed the finish line before I crossed the starting line. Pepsi set up a scissor-lift and were throwing out bicycle caps, so nobody moved...
Why do they bother with the head start for women stunt? It means nothing except as a test of how well the race director handicaps the field. Maybe good for betting purposes, but meaningless in the context of racing.

but they didnt capture many. 23,600. i wonder what the number of bandits is. at least ING has $$$$$ to spend.
Actually it isn't an exaggeration because 60,000 is between 80 and 100,000surprised you didn't know that.
