A couple of times in the last few years I've taken at least a month off (injuries) and I've found that after detraining I can easily reach in the 190s and even 200s. When I'm trained up to my normal racing state, doing ~60 mpw with some faster 5K pace stuff, I'm lucky to hit 180 in the sprint at the end of a race. Often it's significantly lower, resulting in poor times, and I'm trying to understand the cause. I've experimented with increasing carbs, less speedwork, longer tapers, etc. I've read in physio books that MHR tends to decline a bit with training, but this seems ridiculous. I've had a stress ECG and echocardiogram and nothing turned up. I'm 43.
