Can he beat Tergat's record? I say YES!

I say no
I predict a 2:08 for him.
Let's not get carried away.
2:10
american debut record anyone?
too tired too google.. my fingers did some anaerobic workout this morning at work..
I thought it was either Salazar or Culpepper--2:09:40ish.

malmo already covered this. An American debut record isn't a real record. Hall is good enough to go after real records...give him time.
Not yet, but he can part the Red Sea, stop global warming, and cure cancer according to the other threads on Let's Run.

Gonna have to say yes -- maybe not right away, but after a half marathon run like that, the world is open to this young man. That marathon WR is very tough, but I'm not putting any ceilings on Hall now.
Early in his career, he was thought of as a 1500 meter speed guy who couldn't hang with the longer distance guys (Ritz, etc.). He's shown now that at least through a half marathon that he is world class. It could very well be that he really is better at the longer distances and just has some decent speed to go along with that. If so, that's an amazing combination. I'm not about to predict it with his guy as he really needs to show some consistency before I do, but that run was so stout that I'm not putting any limits on him.
Abdi has the american debut record
No. Abdi ran around 2:16-2:18 in his debut.
I would love to see him take Tergats world best, only if just to break 430 milers heart.

Malmo knows nothing.
What is the record?
Well, since Salazar's debut doesn't count, wouldn't it be either David Morris or Culpepper? I could go look it up, but I don't feel like it.
At best, I think, he runs 2:10-12 this spring. As well as he's running right now, there's no way you carry your top end performance through the entire spring. You body can't stay "up" for that long. Now, down the road, does he have the ABILITY to break a WR? Who knows. There's no direct correlation between a half and a full marathon. Anyone who's really raced both distances will tell you they are completely different. He may be able to break a WR someday, but he's just as likely to never run a sub 2:08.
It is completly insane that you compare Hall to one of probably 2-3 of the greatest distance runners in the world. Tergat owns hall at every distance hands down! Yes hall ran a fast 1/2...I don't think it was that surprising given his 20k and the houston course. But to even breath his name in comparison to Tergat or anything Tergat has run??? Remember how fast Geb ran for 10mile, 1/2, 25k before his marathon....and he only managed 2:05-6. Hall has not touched Geb's pre marathon times either! As for strength....again Hall is lacking in comparison...I think he will have a great debut....maybe even mid 2:07's but probably 2:08 or 9.....then he might work that down to a 2:06 one day. But thats about it.
Hall will finish no better than maybe 2:10 for a full marathon his first time out.
The talk about Hall is really getting out of hand, let him have two performances of world class, preferably one on a track, before we start tlaking records...come on...
Allow me to breath Ryan Hall's name in comparison to Tergat and what Tergat had run at the equivalent age:
In 1994, running his 3rd half marathon at the age of 24, Paul managed 60:13 at Milan (like Houston, also an unaided course). Seems Ryan's already doing better.
