Yeah in 2024, Pres times aren’t as jaw dropping as they were 50 years ago but that VO2 test of 84.4 is still amazing. ESP considering how we know the “athlete” Armstrong was.
An extremely high VO2 for a T&F athlete will correlate best for international XC races and road races in 15K to 1/2 Marathon range. Beyond Marathon so many factors: body able to withstand the pounding, pounding creates unmeasurable but real fatigue; efficiency for body to allow carb loading without too much g.i. difficulties and ability to convert liver fat into fuel.
Five-thousand meters, S Prefontaine's best event, ability to race near maximum 600m ability, final 600m is very important. A 12:40 5000m man will have a superior VO2 to a 17:40 5000m runner. In between, who knows?
Who are the best 1500m freestyle swimmers of all time? VO2 for elite 1500m freestyle swimmers, most likely greater than VO2 for sub-12:40 5000m guys but that doesn't mean sub-15:40 1500m freestyle swimmers are going to race sub-12:40 5000m on the track.
Weren't you prohibited from working a real job back then? Like, if you had a job you could not be considered an amateur and therefore could not participate in the Olympics? I would love to hear from someone who knew the rules back then.
Actually, I think you were prohibited from running professionally back then. So you had no choice but to work a real job and to balance work and training. I think Pre was working as a bartender and riding the line of poverty while also trying to be the world's best runner
Many of the best baseball managers were grinders in minor leagues with less than a full season in major league.
The trend, NFL head coaches, guys who played a bit of football D3, no NFL experience as football player. Analytical skills and interpersonal skills are more important than 10000m p.b.
Though Steve Pre was a nice man, we can’t forget he was drunk driving at a level way over the legal limit which is what got him disoriented and killed. He could have easily killed someone that night. That’s a Fact. And my opinion is that if he was some non white guy who did this there would be a different tale, a cautionary tale not to drink irresponsibly and hurt others. If he wasn’t white he wouldn’t be a legend among the boomer or boomer community , something white Americans have to admit

v02 max is a scam. The faster you are, the higher your v02 max will read. Lets not forget that the margin of error is literally 5% on most of these, which is huge. Do a cycling v02 max test when you have recorded 80+ from running and have never cycled before, I guarantee it will be nowhere near 80.

Yes, but after you have cycle trained at a rigorous level for a few months then you could hit 80 on a cycle test provided your weight didn't change.
The main thing is that your odds of having the genetic ability to hit 80 at all are pretty low at all.
One thing about Prefontaine is that he was not a small guy. Dudes with sky high Vo2 maxes ml/kg tend to be smaller waif like guys. I think Prefontaine was 150-155 lbs. 84.4 ml/kg is getting up there for a guy that size. The real freaks are guys who are guys who 165-170 lbs who are in the 80s.

His 84 VO2 isn’t something he was simply born with. He would never have had such a high VO2 if he hadn’t trained like a MFer.
More to it than vo2max. I was measured by 3 different places all had me at 83 vo2max and I never ran sub 4 mile or broke 14 min for 5k or 1:08 for 1/2 marathon
